The real crime here is the $20 bowl of ramen.
As a former waiter I was fascinated by the phenomenon of tipping culture I eventually concluded that the amount of the tip is not determined as much through the perception of quality of service, as we speciously believe, but by the tipper’s inherent sense of a MORAL OBLIGATION to tip.
That is what forms the base tip. Of course, external forces do play a role but usually in the extreme. Really good or really bad service can result in someone deviating from their base tip, usually when service is bad because we are cheap human beings looking for an excuse to save money.
When we get bad service, this helps justify going against that strong moral obligation to leave 10-20%, depending on your culture and how you were raised.
White trash, rednecks are as bad as dindus. They leave nothing. It’s their culture.
One notch up, lower middle class whites and blacks, groups of white women, families where the woman pays are coming in at 10%.
Upper middle class hits 15-20% and people who work as servers will tip 25-50%.
This kid wanted some $20 ramen and didn’t want to give another $4 for a fucking tip. That’s his option. He’s right.
I’ve never chased anyone outside a restaurant for a tip. That’s pathetic and shameful.
