Why does Iran care so much about Israel anyway?

Egypt, Syria and Saudi Arabia are a lot closer to Israel and have learned from hard experience to leave that hornet's nest alone and make peace with them. Not sure why Iran has made its struggle against Israel the defining part of its foreign policy - they've got multiple nations in between them.
Iran may well decide to move on to something else after this asswhipping.

Azerbaijan is a lot more rational enemy to worry about. They may decide to get assertive now that Iran has been weakened.
