The young lawyer stood in the courtroom, staring across at the woman who had defeated him so easily before. She was still as beautiful and confident as ever, but he knew the truth about her now.
He had spent weeks gathering evidence and building his case, determined to put an end to the widow's reign of terror once and for all. And now, finally, he had his chance.
"Your honor," he said, addressing the judge. "I have filed a motion to disqualify lead trial counsel for the defendants. She is not who she claims to be, and I have proof."
The judge nodded, looking over the motion. "Very well," he said. "I will take this under advisement and rule on it before the trial begins."
The widow watched the young lawyer coolly, her eyes gleaming with amusement. She knew that he was no match for her, and she was confident that she would be able to defeat him once again.
But the young lawyer was not deterred. He had fallen for the widow's charms before, but now he knew the truth about her. And he was determined to use that knowledge to finally bring her down.
The young lawyer produced from his blazer a the old photo of the widow, standing proudly next to her confederate beau, and presented it as evidence of her true identity.
"This photo is over a hundred years old," the young lawyer said. "And yet, the woman in the photo is the same one who stands before us today. She is not who she claims to be, your honor. She is an immortal confederate war widow, cursed to live forever after her lover's death in the war."
The judge looked at the photo, his eyes widening in shock. He recognized the woman in the photo, and he knew that the young lawyer's claim was true.
"It is clear to me," the judge said, "that the defendant has been using false identities and manipulating the courts for many years. I hereby rule in favor of the plaintiff, and order the defendant and his counsel to be taken into custody."
But just as the bailiffs were about to take the widow away, the judge spoke up again. "Wait," he said, his voice filled with uncertainty. "I must confess, the defendant is a distant relative of mine. I had no idea that she was still alive, let alone that she was using her powers for evil."
The young lawyer was stunned. He couldn't believe that the judge was related to the immortal confederate war widow, and that he was now considering letting her go.
But the judge was not finished. "I must also admit," he said, "that I owe the defendant's counsel a great debt. She has done much to help our family over the years, and I cannot in good conscience sentence her client to prison."
The young lawyer couldn't believe what he was hearing. The judge was going to let the widow win, simply because she was related to him and had done his family favors in the past.
"Your honor, I must protest," the young lawyer said. "The widow is a dangerous criminal, and she must be held accountable for her actions. She cannot be allowed to roam free and continue to manipulate the courts."
But the judge was not swayed. "I am sorry, but my decision is final," he said. "She is free to go. And her client, too! Case dismissed."
As the widow walked out of the courtroom, a triumphant smile on her face, the young lawyer could only stare in disbelief. He had fought so hard to bring the widow to justice, and yet she had once again managed to evade punishment.
He knew then that the battle was not over, and that he would have to continue to fight against the immortal confederate war widow. She was a powerful and dangerous foe, and he would have to be ever vigilant if he wanted to stop her once and for all.
