How is rap music a thing?

The lyrical content is disgusting. The vast majority of songs are about niggers squirting various bodily fluids; drugs; or violence. Usually all three. But it's totally debased and in the most profane way possible. And this isn't a modern phenomenon because classic Biggie albums have interludes of niggers belching and shit. It's as if it's designed to be as disgusting as possible. Who wants to listen to some guy burping? Moreover, who wants to listen to "Juicy J" rapping about some girl getting "squirt all up in the Benz?" And almost every single song is equally repulsive. Even "underground" rap that has a "message" like Immortal Technique is just profane shit such as someone raping his own mother, but it seems to be a cautionary tale rather than braggadocious. That's the only difference - it's all about crime and sex, but mainstream rap is bragging about it whereas underground rap warns against the excessiveness of it somewhat. Either way the bass beats are shitty and repetitive, the vocals are grating, and there's nothing redeeming about any of it. It's totally insane anyone with an IQ above 60 consumes this garbage and actually enjoys it. 1. Rhythmic pleasure. Similar to how Jazz music creates groovy rhythm through techniques like syncopation, the rap vocals serve as a second drum to the beat. It becomes more fun to listen to it if you start treating the vocals as an instrument.
2. Hierarchy & competition. Rap has a wide range of criteria from which you can evaluate skill. Some rappers are lyrical, others are rhythmical, some good at freestyle, others not, etc. This makes it a fun competition where fans that value certain skills over others become die hard fans of certain artists, and this becomes a tribal thing.
3. Rawness. You need to treat "fuck pussy get cash" thing as an attitude rather than taking them literally. Also, they give off raw, authentic, honest energy that's relatable to people in a very human way.
4. Identity. A lot of rap is about representing where they come from. It's fun to listen to where they come from, especially if they come from the same place as the listener.
5. Fast-paced and trendy. Hip hop changes quickly, so it's fun to follow its trends. For example, "Versace" by Migos, the song that used triplets to create the catchy "Versace" rhythm, made every single rapper use that rhythm for a few years. And now that's obsolete, replaced by other styles.
So I'd say rap is a very entertaining, diverse genre for people that dig it. |
