it's in the same place VR was in 5 years ago where, the foundational tech is there and has the potential for disruption but depends entirely on the application

in terms of real world impact, LLMs are likely to far exceed alphafold. many people acted like alphafold was going to revolutionize drug development, but it's only one small part of the puzzle. DL could help dramatically with drug development, but many other things need to be solved.

there's essentially zero chance of that now. LLMs are already at the point they are likely economically useful, and there are still many directions for growth. Google is training a much larger version of this:

https://www.deepmind.com/blog/a-generalist-agent

LLMs will be trained on more data, made larger and integrated with robotics. i think it's time to move past the "it's just hype" denialism. this isn't 3d printing or self-driving. this actually works and it's easy to make it better by dumping in more computing power.

Both 3d printing and self driving are real. Every new car comes with a bunch of self-driving features and people use them. It is gay as fuck and you can look forward to endless legal fights about “my car automatically ran over that kid, not my fault!” But people are so shitty at driving and so lazy that advances will continue in this area. And 3d printing is actually used for making all kinds of stuff.

I pray you’re right OP. Maybe each now chatgpt is only going to be marginally better than the last. That will give us time to transition. Otherwise, we’ll see wealth, income, and power rapidly consolidate in just a few hands. It will make our current levels of inequality look egalitarian.

sup.

There is no defense of OP's position. Power will be consolidated in the groups that can afford large-scale harvesting & scraping efforts or those who already have the data. My biggest fear is what the NSA is going to do with ChatGPT, because they have more data than any entity on earth with the exception of Google, Facebook, and perhaps Twitter.

You're already seeing it with formerly public APIs now closing down en masse, e.g., twitter and reddit. They don't like that their shit is making others rich. They're doing the classic boomer ladder pull, and you're not on it.

"Usable" VR in an everyday sense is still a few years away. The fact ChatGPT has caused various government agencies to freak out to the point they're considering the implementation of laws to counteract its presence is testament to its power. You didn't see the ABA or various state bars freaking out about lawyers using VR headsets to be less miserable when it came out, however you're now seeing them try to outlaw the use of ChatGPT by lawyers because of the oh-so-sacred billable hour.

There’s a good thread to be made along the lines of “Spaceporn furiously returning Nintendo Virtual Boy to Toys R Us”

OP aged horribly -- just three short years later, AI has replaced millions of white collar workers, and the leading companies are enormously profitable!

you're right, it's just hundreds of thousands of layoffs that companies have explicitly admitted were due to AI ( http://forbes.com/sites/maryroeloffs/2026/06/23/ai-cost-21000-jobs-at-oracle-this-year-and-more-layoffs-could-be-coming/ ). I'm sure it isn't responsible for displacing other workers when companies decide they can cut the size of their teams because AI is increasing productivity. and there's no way it has anything to do with the low employment rate of recent college grads.

Those were actually to make room for jeets, the “AI replacement” red herring regarding layoffs has been thoroughly exposed.

link?

btw, this isn't a technical or universal distinction but personally I prefer the term "displacement" because it doesn't sound as much like AI is just coming in and replacing humans for an entire team, or (as a lot of retards on the internet like to imagine) eliminating an entire job type altogether. when I say "displace" I mean that AI use increases the marginal productivity of individual workers, so companies are able to cut team sizes to save money.

H-1B and outsourced workers have been replacing Americans as long as I can remember, like literally when I was a kid my dad was on a team with mostly Indians in India lol. so far, AI is displacing workers more than replacing. SO FAR.
