Shot one for the first time this weekend and was hitting everything in the 10 or 9 using just irons (out to about 30 feet). Everything I read online says get a holosun but not sure if it's worth it if I'm already a good shot with the irons.

ive seen multiple interviews with ex delta force dudes, and most of them now carry wtih red dots on their handguns.

also that guy who stopped a mass shooting at a mall hit the shooter from like 50 feet away using a red dot on his handgun

also aren't most of these red dots cowitness with the iron sights anyway?

for home defense id get something steel or alloy framed, with big and heavy rounds that wont over penetrate walls. my home gun is a 220 combat with 230 grain defense rounds, 10+1 extended mag.

for 9mm id suggest something like a cz-75 loaded with 124 or even 147 grain

you're correct, my mistake

i should have said you want bigger/heavier because you want to stay subsonic. assume night time + no hearing protection, the bigger rounds will have less muzzle flash (lighter defense rounds are often +p) and won't have the ssonic crack to them.

home defense, you don't care about weight, so steel or alloy frame of a mid or full size gun gives you more accuracy and less recoil.

again, in 9mm i'd say cz75, sig 229 or 226 (225 is still my favorite to hold, but it's low capacity), or a beretta 92.

in 45, metal framed options that aren't single-action only are pretty limited, but a 220 won't let you down.

Don’t put battery powered sights on a gun that’s going to sit in your night stand. Even assuming you put in enough practice that the marginal difference between iron sights and a red dot makes a difference in a home defense scenario (you won’t) I promise you the dead battery risk is way worse than the gain. Delta guys do nothing but fuss with their guns and shit but that’s not you. I have gone through periods in my life where I shot almost every day but I haven’t touched my Glock for about 11 months right now and if someone came through my door right now I’m glad I have iron sights on it. You’ll get busy and forget about this I guarantee you.

Some faggot will tell you your battery will last 50000 hours but ime these battery life claims are bullshit and if I had to trust a gun I hadn’t touched in a year Ljl

If you shoot that infrequently just change the battery at least once a year. It’s really not that risky. You can add co-witness sights too.

Shooting somebody at 20 feet with iron sights isn’t very “risky” either. People can make their own decisions but if my life depended on it and I had to choose between reaching for a gun I hadn’t touched for even one month with iron sights or a red dot I would always choose iron sights. I confess that I am old and gun sight batteries were a lot worse for most of my life than they are now but Im just not willing to bet my life on batteries I don’t check constantly.

I totally get what you mean. Just feel like someone who can’t be bothered to change a battery once a year is even less likely to remember to put the front sight on target. Tech has improved so much in the last decade that all of the recent pistol additions to Cal roster have optic ready slides.

for the untrained (most females, and ahem, some males), getting sight picture is not easy. i personally do not put red dots on home defense guns, because if my wife picks it up, she is going to fumble around trying to sight. not that she uses iron sights any better, but in a home defense situation, you dont want someone who isnt trained on red dot, dealing with it. as mentioned above, home defense situations are at 15 yards or less, you just want something reliable, point and shoot for the untrained.

Ime red dots only require significant training if you’ve already been accustomed to irons.

But agree that she needs to get to a range once in a while. If it’s not feasible then get her a single action revolver with a laser grip imo. Keep the trigger weight low and maybe keep the first chamber empty. Or a shield EZ9 with a good stream light laser.
