Andrew Johnson probably edges him out (although that does involve some hindsight w/r/t the assassination) but he's certainly #1 in modern times

Consequential "candidate" in terms of impact on the election outcome? Possibly.

Consequential in terms of wider impact on history as VP thereafter? Cheney by orders of magnitude, and he will never be beaten.

He ain't remotely consequential, he looks just like James Garfield. If he contests the Presidency in '28 & gets Don Jr. to stand down in exchange for VP, he's getting assassinated by a Qanon person the same way a Grant personality cultist killed Garfield to pave the way for Grant loyalist Chester Arthur after Grant was blocked from the nomination in 1880.

Harris is far more consequential. Biden caving to BLM and picking her in 2020 has put the Dems in a horrible position that was entirely avoidable. If he stuck with his original plan and chose a boring white woman like Klobuchar the Dems easily could have bypassed her when Biden dropped, or if not, they at least wouldn’t be stuck with an awful candidate.

She’s had four years since her failed 2020 campaign and she’s just as bad. She can’t handle even softball interviews, all of her policy proposals fall flat, and she’s wasting the final month engaging in odd behavior like picking a losing fight with DeSantis.

There is zero chance she could make it through a contested primary.

She's palpably unintelligent and a poor speaker; another four years would not have changed that. "Waiting your turn" in politics is almost always the wrong move

cr on Harris, not quite cr on waiting -- good timing is invaluable, and Rubio and Cruz might have incalculably better careers if they didn't happen to choose 2016 to try

Same on Meatball Ron -- very capable governor who really should have simply endorsed Trump, continued his effective governance of Florida, and then run in 2028 or 2032 after continuing to gain momentum. Now, he's the dorky guy who thought he could beat Trump, and has been relegated to always being a functionary in someone else's administration, or a worse Ted Cruz. He might always have been destined to be that, with his terminal lack of charisma, but his best chances of maximizing his rise were to wait.

Do you think Hillary regrets waiting her turn in '04, or Obama regrets not waiting his turn in '08? DeSantis, Cruz and Rubio will all still be viable candidates in '28.

No, in '28 they will be far from viable.

Since Nixon, only Biden has won after previously losing. Failures with multiple tries include:

- Hillary

- Ron Paul

- Bernie

- Romney

- Christie

- Gingrich

- Buchanan

- Rick Perry

- John Edwards

I'm sure there are more, but those are all I can recall off the top of my head. It's highly unusual to succeed after losing once. Voters rarely change their minds. Furthermore, each of them has signature moments of failure:

- Rubio getting bent over and fucked on the debate stage by Christie

- Cruz listening to Trump shit talk his wife, refusing to endorse, and then turning around and endorsing him

- DeSantis' social media parade of general cringe, between the lifts, the awful stilted interactions, etc.

All three have lost significant personal capital / gravitas. I think they each have zero chance at this point.

Obama was never in a position to need to "wait his turn" -- he had all the momentum he possibly could have had. Hillary in '04 is your best warrant here, she absolutely threw away her best shot there.

Reagan lost in '76; Bush lost in '80; Dole lost in '88; McCain lost in '00. These guys could absolutely still get the nomination in '28

IMO pre-realignment GOP candidates are just not going to have a chance compared to new blood like Vance and Ramaswamy.

This is CR but mainly for 2028. They are now stuck with her after she beats Trump and she is actually dumb and unpopular within the party. So when she sucks and is going to lose in 2028 the full blown intra-Dem bloodbath will be on. It will pay off the 12+ years that have been building since leftists soured on Obama in his second term and then pushed Bernie to challenge Hillary. The goal for Vance has to be to do enough to maintain his status as the key lieutenant of MAGA while also keeping himself alive with all other factions who will decide who the post-Trump party leader is. In August he looked completely incapable of doing this, but he’s had a great run since Labor Day and is now perfectly positioned to wipe the floor with Kamala (or whichever Dem succeeds in knifing her) in 2028.

Don’t think she wins but otherwise agree. The 2020 pick would be hugely consequential if she wins because she’d never have gotten there otherwise and is way too dumb for the job, which will be interesting.

I was skeptical she could win pre-debate, and I still see it as basically a coin flip. But the trend since July has been awful for Trump and he’s performed terribly basically since the shooting in July. So I am definitely not ruling him out, but forced to bet on one of them today I would bet her, mainly because she has more advantages to win a larger share of the true undecided remaining 3-4% of the electorate. But it’s obviously a very close race, which means they both have a very legit shot to win.

appreciate the argument, but biden would've never "won" 2020 without harris, it was a razor thin margin

Biden won because he recovered a small amount of WWC voters that Clinton lost. Harris had nothing to do with that and won’t win those voters now.

OK I think we are agreeing that Harris is a consequential VP pick. TBD on Vance, it depends if Trump wins

I think the momentum would've steered towards Trump anyway, but due to the unique circumstances, Vance is probably the only VP whose debate turned the tide of the election.

If Vance loses that probably gives Kamala another week of hot air in the media.
