No 'man' should have a boss. I closed my film finance deal at home on my roof garden. Meetings in central yesterday and today. Laughed at all the gilet bros sardining their way to their assigned seats in their assigned office blocks for their assigned tasks.

I was struck at how manly some of them actually were, their soggy mantits giving a whole new take on the sideboob craze. They scratched the chafe under what used to be a pectoral muscle, stressed at the latest ping from their taskmaster who keeps tabs on when the 'crew' takes an extended 15 mins extra for lunch most Wednesdays. Easy way to deny their next 'formal request' to be allowed to keep maybe just a sliver more of the 'value' they believe they bring to the title of the wheelie chair they all dreamt of scooting around their assigned eight square foot fiefdoms when they were children. To the claw machine, the extra $10k is a meaningless sum. To the sardine, every penny is a token given back to a bigger claw machine for a chance to win a sliver of dignity back. Even when the sardine sees the claws grab some of the dignity and begins to raise itup, the prize slides right through those metal claws, toppling back down into the pile with the rest. Next sardine, please.

Humanity is filled with crooks and frauds. I was fucking shocked - shocked - to find out so is the entertainment industry.

A lot of it comes down to relationships and leverage. Mutually assured destruction is fine if you're okay with it going up in smoke. I am because if have a slate of projects with different folks at different studios in different countries - lots will get close and then die on the 5 yard line. That's normal. If someone tries to steal my lil deal away on this one, though, after 1 night in Cannes no one in the industry will buy it, and it will whither away into oblivion - producer to be shelved, never to be able to get anything made or released that matters ever again.

You're really just betting on having more power or being connected to more people that have power than the other person. I'm not saying I'm some Hollywood powerbroker asshat, but for most folks in the industry, I'll win the game of chicken almost every time. If I don't that one time? That's fine, move on to the next.

My ent business is doing well, but my wife's cafe does pull in £500k/yr - so she is technically the more successful entrepreneur this year.

Ur a bad writer. The wheelie chair sentence is a total mess. The sardine metaphor is a classic wrt office drone commuters, but then you decide to merge it with a claw machine metaphor, where the whole thing falls apart. "Every penny is a token...," "...the claws grab some of the dignity...," so I guess the sardines are playing the claw machine game (which is filled with "dignity" a la Kirk Van Houten)? But also there are multiple claw machines, some of which give the sardines $10,000 / pennies / tokens?

Just stick to what ur good at: using ur struggling production company to rape aspiring young actors.

I applaud the effort and the valiant attempt to poast a more literary take on this well worn topic, but the mixed metaphor totally killed the momentum and muddled a poast that had a chance to be genuinely epic and great.

"I'm so MASCULINE" the wagecuck said as he waits in traffic so he can get to his open office where he will make inoffensive gossip with the hens working there before overpaying for bad cafeteria food and taking calls with people that are often at home. Then you get to wait in traffic to go home. Wow, so MASCULINE you have PRESENCE!

men go out and do things. often at greater rates than women. perhaps if you tried it you wouldn't be unemployed, cooped up inside, making poasts about "return to office" because the only way you're able to socialize is when people are compelled to be in the same building as you.

My deal is that I fly into an office and spend time really socializing and meeting with people for a few days a month and for that time I'm "on." But the rest of the month I can actually get work done. This is much, much more efficient than a daily office grind for everyone.

I hear my daughter with the au pair a floor down. It is totally fine. It doesn't occupy more than maybe a minute or two of my time on any given day and prevents me from having to leave early to deal with family obligations. Yesterday I had a late call. I put on a show for the kid, put her in her baby walker and she ran around having fun. The au pair offered to stay but honestly she was fine. If I worked in an office I would have had to leave early, cancel earlier calls or take them in the car, get home, take the dog out, then get on the later call frazzled and exhausted while dealing with my daughter. Which do you imagine results in superior work product?

You have one kid who is still in a walker, try having multiple kids who are in school and home for summer break for 3 months, in addition to 3 weeks for winter and spring break, and tell me that all of these WFH losers are as productive as they would be in an office.

We have a huge house so as long as they're not in my section it won't matter. The way our house is structured my wife and I basically have our own area upstairs and the kid + au pair + guests have a large downstairs area. They have their own kitchen and everything else. They can also be outside in the yard without bugging us, or at the beach or at the park across the street or whatever. None of that impacts me.

I am significantly less productive in an office. This is pretty well known which is why everyone is happy with our arrangement. The couple days a month I'm in the office are basically a productivity black hole. But I can make it up the rest of the days where I WFH.

women cannot stand an idle man and work often has periods of idleness. having to click away xoxo when your wife walks into the room is even more cucked that doing it when your boss does.

your position on this is self-serving and you even implicitly acknowledge that here. which is fine, but don't elevate it to something that it isn't. if i was in your shoes i'd want my employees to come into the office. but i wouldn't criticize them for not wanting to any more than i'd criticize them for not wanting to work the weekend.

coming into the office is a bargained-for service just like anything else. it's ridiculous to expect employees to want to "create a culture and teams" for *your* business. that's the whole reason you have to *pay* them in the first place.

if you want people to come into the office then create an incentive for them to do it. they're not going to do it for the love of the game no matter how much you wish they would.

Of course my position is in my own self-interest, but it's also the position of the vast majority of business owners, some of whom you all likely work for. I'm not "elevating it to something that it isn't," I'm sharing a perspective that has a seat at the table here and likely more leverage than you WFH people ever will.

It's pretty funny that you're comparing WFH, a widespread phenomena for about 5 years, to the 2 day weekend, an institutionalized part of the culture for probably 100+ years.

In any case, of course it's my responsibility to create a culture for my business, and I do that by hiring the right people that promote what I'm trying to build. And I'm more successful at building my vision if people are visible and working together without many roadblocks. You may flippantly dismiss small talk but it helps people build relationships, which helps my business.

It's just too hard to scale a fledgling new business with people that are not here.

And yeah the incentive is the paycheck and the thousands of your competitors for each job that would gladly come in if we ask them to. You greatly overestimate the talent people working from home possess. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard and in most cases hard workers are not opposed to coming in.

I was overwhelmingly WFH well before COVID (and ultimately, did about 2 days in the office a month then too). And look, you what, run a shitlaw firm? You don't really need me nor can you afford my comp. For people that actually are highly valued and have options most will take the WFH one.

Sure, but your personal options are not as relevant here as what's good for men in a society at large. Men should build things, and pursue excellence for its own sake, they should not be sitting around at home with their 25 pound dog waiting for "assignments."

Ok, so we're not talking about well paid professionals and what is good for their productivity or their options (which, ensure that WFH will continue) but instead we're shifting the conversation to some generic "society at large" where men "build things." We're lawyers. We provide advice on business, technology, risk, etc. and that is the full extent to which we build anything. I don't "wait for assignments" nor do I get "assignments." People reach out to bring me into projects they're working on and my job is to identify the risk and propose solutions. These people are usually not in the same place so all of these meeting are online. Which is why it is also irrelevant that most of these people are usually at home.

As to the "rest of society" - most white collar work could easily be done at home with better results. I'll also note that at home I have a 43" display, a large office with a door, much fewer distractions, and I don't waste time on commuting, lunch or gossiping with whoever.

Also, the dog is 100lbs.

Uhhh, most people do not have large houses with their own separate wings with separate kitchens and separate offices (with a large door!), they do not have just one kid who's still in a walker, they do not have an au pair that is willing to stay late on command, and they certainly do not have your natural abilities or work ethic. What are you even arguing about here?

Let's take a step back. You: no man x, y and z. Me: I'm a man who x, y and z. You: well your situation is unique. We are here.

Yes, I have some advantages and that's why I make several times more than many of the people I describe. I also live in a very expensive area. People could replicate this on far less. Also, if I had a second kid this wouldn't materially change the equation. In short, this is more broadly applicable than you might imagine.

also this is xo and your situation is exactly what he should expect from this audience.

if he's talking about jobs that *need* to be performed on site or low-level workers that cannot be trusted to work off-site, that's different. but expecting his paralegal to show up to work for the love of the game is ridiculous. she's a shitlaw paralegal. if you want her to come in then pay her what it takes to get a shitlaw paralegal to come into the office. what the FUCK would she care about your business?! give her equity and then you can expect her to care.

you can expect to pay the market rate for services. on-site and off-site work are different levels of service. my rate is much more than a plumber because my services command that.

again, the thread title was: No man should work from home.

That's what I was responding to. I don't care about your special situation.

Identifying that WFH sucks for business owners is easy and plainly an accepted fact.

But my position is it's bad for *men* in general. It promotes laziness, sloth (in dress, for example), and is ultimately demoralizing.

you can't just hand wave away this subthread because of the title. you started this subthread with this:

"Completely agree. It's a recipe for atrophying. And as a business owner it's antithetical to how culture and teams are created. You can scoff at that all you want as the wagies that you are but it's true."

*YOU* created this subtopic narrowing it down to business reasons.

do you charge significantly less for your services than the market demands? if not, then why would you expect your employees to? in-office and wfh is different and require different incentives. your fucking secretary is not going to come in because it's better for *YOU*. the whole reason you have to pay her in the first place is because you're purchasing her services. the same reason your clients pay you what they do.

if you want in-office services, then offer in-office work incentives. anything else is childish complaining about human nature. you might as well complain that it's going to be a rainy day tomorrow. sorry, your employees aren't interested in making *you* more money just for the sake of it. just like *you* don't serve *your* clients just for the sake of it.

actually i'm not waving away the legitimate business reasons for working in an office, i'm waving away the insane ridiculous bragging and goalpoast moving you and TMF are engaging in

wfh is bad for business, bad for men

and yeah i pay a fair wage and ensure that whoever i hire works from the office. i'm not paying significantly less or more i'm paying market wages and have no shortage of applicants.

the in-office incentive is they get to have a job. and if they don't make me money they don't work here anymore. does it make sense now?

its not bragging dude. im not trying to impress people in this subthread only you will read. its directly relevant to the topic.

bad for business = irrelevant to people that dont benefit. thats what business *is* and why its not charity. you pay for services with the incentive the market demands, the fact they benefit you doesnt factor into what in to what the service provider demands.

bad for men = childish. men are base and without incentives will be base. if you want society to improve you have to offer an incentive to do so. thats the only reason 99% of people work to begin with.

Your concept that we're all just "bragging" is pretty hilarious because it betrays your own misery. I'm sorry your house is small and you don't like your family. That would indeed suck. But when I made my posts it didn't occur to me that having a normal amount of space and not hating your family is something to brag about.

Lol, no it isn't. It has broadly proven to have failed after 5 years. Business owners are in the business of making money. If this was supportive of making money, the vast majority wouldn't be asking people to come back. Whether it's "replicable" (and I completely disagree that it is for the vast majority of Americans who are living in far more cramped quarters with far more responsibilities than you) is not as important here as whether it is good for the enterprise, for society, or for men themselves. That's what this thread was about, you appear to be confused and have made this into a ridiculous bragging contest.

Your notion that I'm posting this to brag is hilarious. I'm just posting my setup. It is by no means the most opulent on XO. RSF is a trust fund kid, TBF is rich from crypto along with others. I still work for a living. But I overwhelmingly WFH and I value it tremendously. You noted problems and I noted how I resolved them. My house is just over 3500 sq ft but in Texas and Florida 5-7k isn't rare by any means.

The reason companies are doing RTO is mostly to cull certain jobs without doing layoffs. You will notice that a few months later many of these companies ended up hiring significantly... in India.

look, i'm a go-getter irl and do plenty of in-person stuff. but i do so because it's in *my* interest to do it. i value *my* career, and building relationships and having a seat of the table is important for that.

if it wasn't in *my* interest i wouldn't do these things. that's what i'm complaining about with your poasts on the matter. you seem to expect people to want to do it because you assume their interests align with yours. but that's not always going to be the case. you have to create the incentive. you're taking responsibility for that in your last poast, but in the past it wasn't explicit.

a lot of work can be done remotely and a lot of people will work hard doing it. do you perform your client's work on site? i am opposed to coming to the office when there is no benefit. the best and most talented workers also want freedom and trust to do their job. part of the reason i've worked hard in developing my career is so i won't be treated like a child or fungible cog. when there is a meeting or an event i throw on a suit and come in. but 90% of my job is performed in my office with the door shut. and i would not consider working for an employer that demanded i do that on site.

you take a lot of pride in being a business owner in part because you have the freedom and authority to work as you choose. and you mock "wagies" for being "less of a man" itt. now i know you're being factitious and i'm not accusing you of being this way for real, but if that's how my employer viewed me i would quiet-quit until i found a different job. i'm a professional and i expect to be treated as one, which includes not being told to come into the office when i'm performing work that cannot involve socialization.

note that i'm talking about me i.e. a senior person that is more trusted. when it comes to low-level employees i agree with you, but that's only because they have to earn the trust and authority i have. but they're only going to do that if it's worthwhile to *them.* which means you're gonna have to pay them enough or be valuable enough to want to impress. i assume your business is a small law firm, which means your staff isn't likely to be gunning to climb the ladder, because there is no ladder. so you're going to have to pay them since they don't have the career aspirations i did (by incentives i didn't mean strictly compensation).

nothing says alpha male more than putting on a pair of jos a banks slacks and a brooks bros 346 non-iron shirt (saves money on dry cleaning!) then sitting in your toyota prius for 2+ hours a day in traffic listening to podcasts and spotify so you can go to your office (if you're ascended enough to even have one vs. a cubicle) and shitpoast on autoadmit.com all day because xoxohth.com is blocked by corporate IT and then eating overpriced fast casual slop that will make you even fatter.

this lifestyle is all much more preferable and way more alpha than spending time with your kids, having sex with your wife, and playing golf when you have downtime during the work day

People are right that going to the office and taking orders from some other man isn’t alpha at all but these people aren’t taking that extra spare time and going out and accomplishing things. XOers are some of the most hideous incels so by WFH they’re sitting there not showering not working out not accomplishing anything. Complete never touched incels.

If you take the time you would be in the office and accomplish something that’s one thing, but I doubt anyone here is.
