United App says I have 86,439 miles. Maybe I could cash those in for a bottle of water or something.

I don’t see the point in these miles. I’ve been accumulating for 20 years and have probably spent $100,000 on the airlines and I can get “free WiFi” for 10 flights. Wow. What a steal. I love my status. I am elite.

You're an order of magnitude off with that wifi calculation. And did you miss that you could probably get a free flight to Hawaii? That's not exactly bad as a reward as long as you didn't spend any of that money just to get miles

Nonstop to Hawaii (HNL) is 25,000 miles per leg. So it'd cost 50,000 to go to Hawaii + $11.20 in airport fees.

So looks like you could get two great roundtrip tickets then. I imagine flights to CA or whatever shithole you would want to fly to would be cheaper, or at least not more expensive than, Hawaii

It’s easy to do if you have status. If you’re just an occasional flyer they make it an asspain.

United requires you to fly like 20 domestic flights for silver tier and I don’t do connecting flights if I can avoid it so that’s pretty difficult for me.

You get status through qualifying flights OR by spending money. The business class trip made me silver nearly on its own

Edit: wait, are you pissed off because money spent, like a single business class flight, can get status faster/easier than sweating it out with the proles over like 20 flights?

When I was young and half broke I got in the habit of hoarding these things in case I "needed" them. Then I kind of forgot about them until one day I realized it no longer matters to me what a plane ticket costs but I had a ton of miles. So I've cashed in about 500k in the last few years, mostly Delta because that's what I usually fly. But I have about 350k aa and 600k Amex points that I'll use going forward. The value keeps going down I'm told so might as well use them.

I don't even know how that works.

The little card thing on flights says that a drink is like $10 or some number of miles, but I couldn't tell you the steps to do that.

This era is so fucking over.

Years ago I remember cashing in 25k for an economy rountrip on united (really continental).

Now the credit card "miles" have inflated shit beyond any degree of comprehension. its like 160K for the same flight.

The biggest gripe was the change to "Spend" - during a period of 4 years I was traveling business class to europe constantly and each time I was credited like 1000 miles instead of the 7000 I would have been entitled to under a different regime. So after 4 business trips I was still no where near "silver tier" sps

fuck boomers

it's either that or $0.000. I will never get enough miles through regular flying and even if you do CC stuff to stack miles it ends up being a pain in the ass to actually redeem them. hotel points are far easier by comparison.

I get straight cash back on everything - i still cash in my Delta miles like every 5 years.

Not sure how people deal with this mile and points bullshit. There's all this kafka-esque rules where you can never get the flight you want - even if it is the same price its like 3x as many "miles" - so you end up spending all this time trying to navigate teh bullshit and end up sitting in a middle seat 30 rows from your significant other because they can't combine points tickets because one is a J fare and the other is an L fare.

This shit was only worthwhile before they had an army of computers working on an algorithm to make sure you could never extract any value from your "points".
