Like 90% of these people have never played sports and they either give shit advice to their kids or are actively ruinous coaches

attempting to coach young children is pretty gay, you aren't going to make another a Tiger and all of the rest of them don't physically develop enough to know if they'll be any damn good until high school

Right. Until they’re about 7 it’s just about having fun and forming some hypotheses about their abilities and interests. After that the way to get ahead isn’t to compete with other little Timmies it’s specialized coaching and skill work.

7? Bro you're pretty off on that. And tbh baseball in particular sucks as a kids sport. They need a minimum level of skill for the game to start being fun. You won't know who's actually going to be good until 14u at the earliest. I also think a lot of the specialized coaching is overrated. I doubt it's worth the cost and time investment. And this is coming from a dad that has spent thousands on private lessons and I put a batting cage up in our back yard. If my kid plays baseball through highschool I'll be happy.

Countless studies suggest professionals start focusing around that age. Baseball is more g loaded than others so 7 is probably too young. My kid just finished coach pitch, it’s been 180 to see the growth from nothing to them understanding what outs are and making the right play half the time. I was thinking about basketball and individual sports like golf and tennis.

I just finished our last year of coach pitch, and agreed. Seeing them actually get to where it's competitive is fun to watch. But fuck me do I hate the other 90% of coach pitch. Kids screaming in the dugout, catcher gear constantly falling off and on and on.

The extra lessons and seeing more pitches in general will set them apart from their peers. I recommend getting a cheap mechanical pitching machine and do an hour here and there down at the park. Start off with the yellow rubber balls so that they get some confidence. You can use it for fielding too. Doing some periodic work in the office season will make him a much better player and he'll have more fun.

Yeah that’s what we do and tbh don’t need much besides a few balls, bat and glove. And I don’t even take it that seriously, after 20 minutes if they want to go play on the slides that’s fine. Sports are supposed to be fun and these parents try their hardest to ruin it for them to massage their own egos.

Good call re keep it light. And nothing in life is better than playing catch with your kid and shooting the shit with him.

We had a dad last year that was insane. He had his kid on addy and would feed him red bull before games. He was doing weight training at 10. Kid was a pretty good hitter but without fail he'd make the wrong move when the pressure was on. I think that was because of the dad.

% might be off but not by much. What strikes me is the return on investment these parents expect. These are 10 year olds. We have no idea who will be good once they hit puberty. After a practice once I told my kid to chill out, it's not like he's missing a chance at MLB. Lol the other dad with me was floored saying I was crushing dreams.

So far as I can tell the credited approach is to see sports as an additional support circle around the kid. It's the same with a good school, going to mass, etc. That's what I'm investing in. The games can be entertaining but that's just a side benefit.

Was at a Little League game recently where a kid bunted foul with two strikes and a nebbish, short, whiny, bald parent from the the other side screamed "it's illegal to bunt with two strikes!"

my sons' LL coach had a great way of dealing with parents. at the parent meeting he'd ask for a dad who hadn't played baseball and then he'd have the assistant coach pitch to the dad while the head coach had a megaphone yelling "please, son, please, get a hit for me and your mother! we need you to get a hit!" everyone would laugh, including the dad at bat.

then the head coach would announce a rule that parents can never coach from the stands and that they can speak to their kids only after the kid's at-bat was over and that the only thing the parents could say would be "nice" and then either "hit" or "cut."

finally, the coach said that every parent had to decide if they wanted to be a parent or a baseball coach. he had a humorous way of doing it. but if a parent coached from the stands the coach would step out from the dugout and glare until the parent realized what they had done.

his wife would sit with the parents who wanted to learn baseball and they'd all score the game together with pencils and scorepads. it's amazing how quickly you learn the game that way. there was this one Polish dad who knew nothing about the game but by mid-season he was an expert in a chill way.

That’s 180. It seems like it gets really bad once umpires and balls and strikes are involved. Those parents get heated, it’s trashy as fuck.

My kid’s coach played at UCLA and got to triple AAA. I really like the guy, super even keeled and he doesn’t take any of this shit seriously.
