MBS: about -$311 billion

Agency MBS are similarly underwater:

Cost: $2.034T

Market value: $1.723T

Unrealized loss: $310.8B

Almost all of that is residential agency MBS.

As of October 1, 2026, the Fed's accumulated deferred asset—essentially past Fed losses that must be earned back before normal Treasury remittances resume—was about $233.1B. Federal Reserve The Fed's March 2026 SOMA portfolio also had $856.7B of unrealized losses, consisting primarily of about $546B on Treasuries and $311B on MBS.

The rough calculation is:

$856.7B + $233.1B = $1.090T or roughly $21,600 per mortgage.

buying bonds at 2-4% rates and then seeing rates raise to 5-8% is certainly the smarter move

(guy who thinks buying treasurys has no impact on house)

i guess if the 10 year went to 10%, it would have no impact on borrowing rates right?

this is more about a $1T loss that the US govt took as a handout to asset holders.
