It's not like heliocentrism is at odds with biblical scripture. There was never any church doctrine that required geocentrism to be true, and proving heliocentrism wouldn't cause anyone to lose faith. What happened was Galileo himself start shouting about how revolutionary this new concept was. He made a big stink out of it. That was what pissed of the cardinals. Many prominent catholics already believed in heliocentrism at the time, it wasn't even controversial until Galileo claimed it was.
Even that would have been ok if Galileo could produce hard proof, but all he could say was that the math is simpler. All the church ever said was "come back when you have actual proof."
tl;dr: the people who "persecuted" Galileo were really just better scientists than Galileo. Galileo was just a crank who made good telescopes.
