The way life spread on land was that plants appeared first before animals. So by the time the first insects appeared, there were already plants everywhere even if there were no trees yet. So these insects had the whole surface of the earth to themselves and there was no limit to what they could do until these other arthropods appeared and started preying on them. In less than an hour, these new arthropods could create huge nasty nets that could trap anything. All of a sudden the surface of the earth was covered with these sticky webs and insects couldn't fly around so much anymore. It was all downhill from there, with insects being forced to live in the dirt and underground to avoid these enormous webs
