The most selective colleges should hold lotteries among their qualified applicant pool of 99th percentile SAT scorers with some additional criteria like required SAT subject tests in Calc and Physics. Grades, ECs, race, and legacy status shouldn't be factors.

Actually it's sports that are the best predictor of success in life, not SAT's. Isn't an education about a better life, not just "academic success".
A 2023 National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) study by Paul Gompers and colleagues found that Ivy League varsity athletes earn approximately 3.4% more over their careers than their non-athlete peers, controlling for factors like school, major, graduation year, and first job. Athletes also tend to attain more senior positions. The study suggests that athletic participation builds non-academic human capital (e.g., resilience, teamwork, time management) valued in the labor market.

Don't understand how anyone can think that something like teacher recommendations should be a major factor.
It'd be fair if the teachers were like "Pick this kid, not this kid" - but they're all obviously writing hte best recommendation they can for each student.
Seems absolutely insane that students should be admitted based on how well their teacher can advocate for them. You could plausibly say you should give preferential treatment to the kids with "bad" recommendations because they're teachers are stupid.
