Starting to invest at age 40, what do I need to know?

Put off investing for ages bc too pussy.
When I finally went in I was stupid and went all in on a specialized long short fund in Feb that did great at first that has been down only since April when the mkt went up 20% and is flat now. So I freed up some more cash and bought vgt at literally the top ($124.5) one week ago and watched it fall 10% and now I want to die. |

Anyway if it goes up by 8% 2 years in a row that’s technically compound interest
There are other forms of interest that don’t compound per se such as the interest paid on a Bond iirc. |

Date: June 14th, 2026 7:57 AM Author: Charles Tyrwhitt Dad Just put everything in a S&P fund like VOO or FXAIX and forget about it until retirement. If you want to diversify, do 50% VOO 30% VTI and 20% VSUX. These are ETFs covering the S&P, the broader total stock market, and international funds.
Don't ever sell till retirement. Ignore market swings. You lose more money panic selling than leaving the fund alone and accepting the bear markets every now and then. |
