There are 2 entire Jock sports that Britons don’t even play (baseball and football). Not sure if they know what basketball is. So instead of Jocks/Preps I guess they only have Preps.

Culturally also they appear to lack Engineering awareness. Obviously they have a storied history of High Nerds. But I feel like MG/Rover/Jaguar/Rolls/Bentley would’ve survived and not been acquired if the Nerds were better and more plentiful.

If it REALLY is a country of Preps and Scum then it makes sense that they’d basically need to import immigrants to actually do “jobs” imho. Is this your take as a Liberal?

The rich and successful of Britain have loathed paying taxes and have migrated to the channel islands, Switzerland, Bermuda, Cayman, Cyprus, Monaco, Dubai, Hong Kong and various other tax havens. Industrious Brits have always left for the "colonies". Those who are left are some of the world's biggest degens

GDP can be gamed. In the UK most healthcare is valued at-cost, because it's provided by the state, whereas in the US most healthcare is valued at its market price, so healthcare adds more to US GDP than to UK GDP, not because of a difference in the quantity or quality of the services, but merely because of the funding source.

That’s not “gaming.” That’s just the metric itself being horseshit. Btw you oversimplify to a ridiculous extent bc any savings from not Consooming healthcare can be spent elsewhere imo.

For people who don't want to read or who aren't capable of reading:

England's economic problems are driven by the combination of Thatcher's pivot away from an industrialized economy towards a services-driven one, austerity measures rather than stimulus spending and welfare investments, reckless exit from the EU, and inability to turn ongoing productivity declines into economic growth in areas outside of London, while London itself has essentially flatlined. It also hurt that they were unable to stem the tide of immigration. There are some bright spots, like a nascent startup company boom building around learning powerhouses Oxford and Cambridge, and Manchester's outsized growth under a system that gave it more localized control than other cities enjoy.

But, horror of horrors, the country seems to be ready to embrace Nigel Farage and his Reform party based on their criticism of recent politics and political leaders and demonization of immigrants who have arrived by the millions. This despite the lack of clarity and specificity for how Farage would turn things around--a problem reminiscent of Starmer's failed campaign promises for growth without any details. Implicit is that the fellow delivering success in Manchester is the better pick who is likely to lose because people are angry and things are bad.

Yeah it’s funny that the writer’s critique of Reform (other than the standard racismsexismhomophobia etc.) is that Reform has no plan. But who has a plan? Labor and the Tories have switched back and forth for like 10 years with 10 different PMs. Did they have a plan? If they did, clearly they didn’t work. So why should not having a plan be a dealbreaker? Let Reform (or even the Greens) get a chance, at least it will be different.

I agree with your view and am a huge fan of genius bears

There was mention that Farage has learned from Trump's administrations and will follow the second one's approach of immediately bringing to bear--no pun or slight intended--a wealth of policy implementations. So to me it wasn't clear if the author was indicating that Farage is hiding what he's going to do (but knows what it is and will be prepared to do it) or if he thinks there aren't any real plans and that whatever he does will likely be knee-jerk, poorly thought out approaches

In any case, you'd have to be fucking crazy to give years of warning to The System for how you're going to hack it apart. So I'm sympathetic to the present lack of specificity. But I give no quarter to breaking the generalized promises like what Trump has done and is continuing to do in this second term

Any plan that anyone has would seemingly take like 25 years to manifest. Like NAFTA passed in 1994 with hundreds of Republican votes, then like millions of Scumbags got fired in the 2000s, and then people were like "Obama what the fuck." Giving Farage a few years, I mean the only thing he could conceivably get done is to slow down immigration and do some Pro-Business type legislation. Like make it possible to fire Cockney Scum without requiring retaining them for like 3 months.
