Take three examples:

1. Race Relations. These used to be bad. But by the 1980s and 1990s, things were improving fast (ghettos aside) and by 2000 people were much more color blind than they used to be. So they pivoted to group identity and redefined “racism” in a way that would pit black and white against each other into eternity. Racism has been re-defined as always existing. A solvable problem becomes unsolvable.

2. Poverty. There used to be a lot of poverty. But economic growth for decades (and maybe also dem programs) means that there is no more absolute poverty in the Western world, and much of the poor world is on the way out of poverty now too. So they pivoted to a different definition of poverty that defines it as *relative* to the average, so that the poverty line is always the lowest X% of incomes. Even if we all get 10x richer, there will always be a lowest X%. Poverty has been re-defined as always existing. A solvable problem becomes unsolvable.

3. The Environment. In the 1960s and 1970s, the issue was actual pollution, deforestation, running out of resources. But by the 1980s and 1990s, a lot of these were starting to be solved – the air and water are much cleaner, there are more forests than since the 1700s, and increased efficiency & exploration means that there isn’t the resources crunch many feared 50 years ago. So they changed the problem to too much of something we all breathe out every minute, carbon dioxide, and called that “pollution” instead. A solvable problem becomes unsolvable.

They don’t want to solve problems. They need the problems to exist forever. A stroke of genius really.

income inequality is a real problem (largely do to shitlib policies like open borders and untethered gc). even though our impoverished live in relative luxury compared to any other time in history, there is still a big problem. it's going to keep getting worse with gig workers + illegals doing everything.

Yeah wow holy shit. Christopher Hitchens hated Mother Theresa for this -- alhough her hospice was ostensibly to help the sick and dying, she never actually helped or got medical treatment for any of them, instead she basically told them to exult in their status as dying and poor

(he said it much better than that obviously, but you get the point)

yes, i hear you. by defining poverty as "relative to the average" rather than material conditions, they've created a metric where poverty will always exist. even under hypothetical perfect communism some level of material inequality would exist.

No this is actually a retarded account of the economic policy debate on the left and brushes past the change in environmental policy, which has actually become much more realistic in its genuine ambitions while simultaneously insane in its rhetoric (mainly bc these people are all trained by the same nuts who have perpetrated CRT). Really it's a much better attack against environmentalists than progressive economic policy. In reality income inequality has been the obsession of everyone on the economic left since Occupy and it's been the dominant strain of thought in the left overall since Piketty. The Dems literally just tried and failed to get a 2+x minimum wage increase passed over opposition from the eGOP and the "populists" in the GOP that all opposed it as an existential threat. But opposing environmental regulations that have the potential to eventually become industrial sectors that are self-sustaining is as important today as killing single payer was in 1993.

As econ policy, arguably yes although not in the specific instance of the majority of min wage workers in the U.S. Most likely outcome near and medium term by far is higher prices for all not less min wage jobs. But the point is that the Left doesn’t present econ inequality/income inequality as unsolvable. They present it as the preferred and intended outcome of right wing econ policies dating back to Friedman and the Powell memo and lots of people, including many Trumpmos, agree with that assessment of 1981-2016, and it was the most basic version of the argument that Piketty made.

No group but whites was ever naive to be "colorblind" it's just that now a substantial fraction of whites have gone woke.

this needs to be pointed out a lot more frequently and aggressively. crime is a policy choice. it always kind of was, but in the surveillance age, is ABSOLUTELY results from government policy decisions, and nothing else is nearly as significant.

Crime

Violent crime in most Western countries has been dropping since the 1990s, and yet concerns about crime have surged in recent years. Despite cities being statistically safer than they were decades ago, the narrative of rising crime has gained traction. Social media and selective news coverage amplify isolated incidents, creating the impression that crime is out of control. A solvable problem—reducing crime—has been reframed as an unsolvable one, keeping people in a state of fear even as conditions improve.

Immigration

Immigration levels in many countries have been high for decades, and in some cases, have even stabilized. Yet, suddenly, it’s portrayed as an existential crisis. In the past, economic arguments dominated: “We need workers,” or “Immigrants contribute to growth.” Now, cultural and security concerns have taken over, even when data shows immigrants are not disproportionately responsible for crime or economic downturns. A solvable problem—managing immigration effectively—has been redefined as an unsolvable one, ensuring perpetual outrage.

Tariffs

For most of the post-WWII era, free trade was seen as the path to prosperity. Countries lowered trade barriers, supply chains became global, and economic growth accelerated. Even when trade caused disruptions, the general consensus was that the benefits outweighed the costs.

But in recent years, tariffs have made a comeback as a political tool. Instead of being a last resort for protecting critical industries, they’ve been reframed as a necessity to “save jobs” or “punish” other countries. The reality is that tariffs often hurt consumers, increase costs, and lead to retaliation. A solvable problem—adjusting to global competition—has been redefined as an unsolvable one, keeping trade disputes alive and ensuring permanent economic friction.

this AI summary kind of completely misses the point of everything. aside from the US murder rate exploding by 40% from 2019 to 2022, it is several multiples of where it ought to be if existing technology was merely used to identify and arrest more actual criminals.

this can be done immediately, since the systems which identify violent thugs already exist. not doing so is a policy choice.

This is most non profits too. If they solved the problem they’d be out of a job, so it just goes on forever. It’s also like women, who don’t actually want you to solve their problem because they need something to complain about.
