Former students told Caixin that the institution had connections with a broader network of “family education” programs promoted by influencer Zhang Lihong, who presents herself as a family education expert and personal growth mentor.
Zhang built a commercial system around courses, training camps and membership communities. Some programs charged families hundreds of thousands of yuan for extended “growth” experiences.
College student Fang Yutong said she was sent to Qinyuanbo after struggling with depression and self-harm. Later, she was transferred to Zhang’s “Love Growth Camp,” a program that charged nearly 500,000 yuan ($73,000) for a five-month course.
Fang said the camp took students to remote locations, including deserts in China and overseas destinations, where they underwent intensive activities described as “extreme growth.”
Fang said she and some others were taken to Guinea-Bissau in West Africa for cult-like activities linked to Indian spiritual leader Nithyananda.
China’s embassy in Guinea-Bissau issued a warning in April, saying a group was using training programs in the country to spread cult-like teachings and collect money. The embassy did not name the group, but Caixin identified it as the same program involving Zhang’s organization.
