Third-Tier Toilet, something that pompous law students use to insult any school that is not in the top 14 (T14).

Actually, I think it started on the old PR college board. TTT schools are usually state-u's (besides Michigan, Berkeley, UCLA, UVA, etc), small liberal arts colleges, or other schools where intelligent students go for free instead of paying full tuition for a top 25 school.

It morphed into a description of non-elite law schools, though the threshold for which schools are TTT is usually in dispute, and it often ebbs and flows depending on the characterization of various schools that posters are attempting to convey.

Yes. Its used widely by those who value name-brand over substance, prestige (whatever that means) over knowledge. Usually people who commence in ridiculing excellent institutions that aren't uber-elite like HYP have deep inferiority complexes and have to make up for it by condemning everything else.

Personally I value education over everything else, no matter how you obtain it. There are very many alumni of HYP that are idiots (ahem, our president comes to mind) and many truck drivers that are extremely enlightened and well-read.

Yes, this is a very erroneous and biased theory. Such language only obfuscates the very simple concept that those who feel the need to judge others are actually judging their own inadequacies and are overcompensating.

If you want to go to Harvard Law, go to Harvard Law. If you want to go to Iowa State, then go to Iowa State. If you can't get into to Harvard Law, then so be it. Harvard Law offers an excellent education. So does Iowa State. However, education is not quantifiable measurement and Harvard does not have more of it. It may have more facilities and more prospects for employment, but it does not have more education to give out.

The question here is not whether HYP are superb institutions--they are. The question here is whether those who ridicule others for going to a non-HYP school are justified? I say they are not.

Trust me, if I had a choice to either attend HYP and graduate but were quite ignorant of everything versus having a very educated, enlightened background but didn't finish the 8th grade, trust me, I would choose the latter. Education and enlightenment are the points that matter, not how you achieved said education and enlightenment.

You had me going up to here:

"Trust me, if I had a choice to either attend HYP and graduate but were quite ignorant of everything versus having a very educated, enlightened background but didn't finish the 8th grade, trust me, I would choose the latter. Education and enlightenment are the points that matter, not how you achieved said education and enlightenment."

Let's be honest, I can think of few if any examples of people who are very educated and enlightened without having finished the 8th grade. Went to state-u, but not Harvard? Ok, fine. But this is pure bullshit.

Lincoln? Yes, an old example but still addresses the point. What about those who come from third world countries where the education systems are defunct but somehow manage to scrape enough money and come to the U.S. for an education? Are they third-tier-trash? I would say no.

I chose those two extremes to make a point. Very few people come out of HYP completely aloof from their world and yes, very few people lacking anything higher than an 8th grade education have the drive or motivation to learn anything beyond their insular world (mostly because you can't drop out of formal schooling until 16 and by that time most people have at least made it to high school). But representatives from both extremes do exist. And I would rather keep my curiosity, my wonders about how the world works and my amazement when I do discover something new than go to HYP, graduate, and only give a sh1t about me me me and what goes on in Biglaw & Biglaw & Biglaw LLP.

I don't know about overall, but here's one example--my grandpa was pulled out of middle school to work the family farm. He ended up marrying a high school valedictorian, and starting a business which set them both up for life. He was probably the smartest man I've ever met and was one of the few in my family to support higher education for his children and grandchildren. Oh, and he was briefly a truck driver.

OK, thanks -- I was just curious. Because for a minute there, when you wrote that it "matter[s] not how you achieved said education and enlightenment," I thought you meant that it didn't matter to you how good these programs were. My bad.
