bitcoin took like TWO YEARS to bottom out in the last bubble. it peaked at 1k, hovered at 800-900 for a while, then very gradually declined to 250. granted, the order of magnitude of that bubble (considering it was 90% btc and not a gaggle of shitcoins on its heels) was much smaller

God's honest truth: if the hearing goes well, and the market doesn't react accordingly, I'm selling 50% of my shitcoin portfolio.

This is reaching levels of complete retardation, and I want to sell just so I stop caring. I no longer want to have money in something that is beyond irrational.

my point is it's virtually impossible to put any sort of number on this for many years. until ethereum (or other cryptos) is actually used for its primary intended purpose of being a distributed computing system (or medium of exchange in the case of e.g. monero), and the transaction speed is SHARDINGUPGRADED, things will flop around based on the whims of korea and china. it's very hard to get a grasp on the velocity of (crypto) money when 99% of the flow is in speculation instead of usage. the money from merchant banks backing visa doesn't need to be on the order of trillions in reserves; on the other hand, nobody is trying to hoard that money either.

is it more than 60 billion? probably, maybe? it's a worthwhile gamble, assuming benevolent dictator buterin keeps eth on top of n competitors.

I thought Warren (and Clayton's responses) just reiterated what clayton already said in his written testimony, i.e., investors please be careful because (1) no ICOs have been or are in the process of being registered with the SEC so we cannot offer you the same legal protections as when you purchase SEC-registered securities, (2) cross-border money transfers diminish the likelihood of the regulators to go after bad actors and recover any funds, and (3) online trading platforms and wallets are susceptible to hacking and unrecoverable losses. Oh, and we encourage you ICOs to register so that we can offer proper legal protections to the investors.

the bigger issue imo is that unlike automobiles, this is something where china is on pace with the rest of the world and one of the leaders from the start. given their absurd protectionism and our lack of giving a fuck, it gives anything developed in china a huge leg-up as they will pick and choose what to "allow" in china.

this is an issue in general, but could manifest bigly in crypto as it's a new (at this point still mostly theoretical) industry

Crypto will grow increasingly more difficult to regulate. Miners, to the extent crypto needs mining, will relocate where energy is cheapest. A greater percentage of crypto transactions will move to dex’s. And the fiat on-boarding process to crypto is rife for ‘disruption’ as they say

but at the end of the day you still need

1) USD/Yen to move in and out of crypto exchanges

2) corporate adoption of blockchain for commercial purposes

these 2 are critical for crypto and easily controllable by central governments. yes they can't cutoff access to blockchain themselves but they can easily control money transfers and which blockchains are allowed to be used by F1000 companies
