whitepaper / purpose behind coin, value proposition, quality of team, partnerships, evaluate similar coins to get a sense of the potential market
ultimately most "research" that people do is a joke but most of these coins are worthless anyways and fundamentals are only driving prices to the extent that they fuel speculation. the more reading you do the better you'll be able to evaluate these things and the more comfortable you'll feel making judgments. most of it will read like gibberish until you've read through enough opportunities to get a decent handle on the technology. but prices will follow speculation on the fundamentals only until the market decides that it's had enough.
best way to play crypto is to pick just a very select number of things which have good support from demonstrably top-notch teams and demonstrable partnerships with reputable companies, buying opportunistically based on the market, and then otherwise play short-term situations where you might get a catalyst to help you out. >99% of these coins don't deserve your time.

Learn the basics of what makes cryptos unique: blockchain, decentralization, smart contracts, wallets, and tokens. One of the main problems ETH/BTC face right now is how to improve scaling (how to make the blockchain big and fast), while still maintaining decentralization and security.
Then just go to the coin websites. First look at whether the coin is trying to be a better version of ETH/BTC (i.e. a whole new platform), or whether it is trying to enhance one of the platforms already established (i.e. usually a "utility" token).
90% can be weeded out by the website alone because they cannot coherently describe in 2-3 sentences what the coin does, or what problem it solves. You don't need to be an expert. If it sounds retarded, it probably is.

1. Did Luis shill it?
2. Did exeunt shill it?
3. Did the rest of XO shill it?
4. Did 4Chan shill it?
2 out of the first 3 equals a strong buy, 1 out of the first 3 with #4 is possibly good for a quick flip.

crypto is speculative trading. none of these coins have IRL use (even BTC/ETH) today. its possible blockchain might revolutionize contracts/transaction at an unknown point in the future but nobody knows. crypto today is like investing in internet stocks in early 90s. yes there is an amazon out there but 99% of these coins wont exist 3~4 years from now
long term in crypto world is a matter of months or a year at best. so focus on the quality of founders and partnerships/hype. then try to flip it for 2~3x if u are lucky. everything else is absolute fucking flame
BTC/ETH will have some value as alternative investment but future price growth of these two coins is entirely dependent on crypto becoming more mainstream and new money. so without utility value other than ICOs its essentially a quasi ponzi scheme right now for BTC/ETH
Finally try to get on as many quality ICOs as possible. thats probably the best thing you can do as listing on any major exchange by itself will guarantee you 2~5x gains
