The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) sent subpoena letters last month to Bitfinex, a cryptocurrency exchange, and Tether, a company that offers digital currency that it says is tied to the value of the U.S. dollar, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.

flawless market manipulation, should have waited a little longer since the last wolf-cry about South Korea and would have had a bigger impact

What's the significance of this? I mean besides the two month lag in sending the subpoena and reporting on it. Maybe Bloomberg just found out and then reported it? It's still significant news. And we don't know how bfx and tether responded so that might be bad news as this thing develops. I just don't care. I'm fucking holding.

The government takes much longer than that. In the meantime, their audit firm has dropped them. Sounds pretty bad, although I think it's somewhat overblown.

Those boomer government lawyers must be having a HELL of a time figuring out all of this shit as they go.

I wouldn't read too much into the timing. The fact that it is news right now means someone at the companies, or perhaps the audit firm, disclosed the existence of the investigation. Two months would be the early stages of most fed investigations.

The one thing that is interesting is that they kept printing USDT. Would you do that when under subpoena by the CFTC and knew you didn't have them backed up?

If its a huge gigantic scam, why stop if you know the feds are going to find out soon? If they are really doing what people claim, just printing fake USDT, there is no way to paper their way out of it.

Of course the other possibility you are suggesting is that they are legit and have nothing to worry about, at least from an outright fraud perspective. In this post I lay out my reasoning as to why I think Tethers could theoretically have a 1:1 backing: http://www.autoadmit.com/thread.php?thread_id=3864801&forum_id=7#35192133
