Can you imagine top writers today commanding $55k for a few thousand words? Nowadays top writers will write whole novels like 500k words for that much in an advance

back in the 1920s no one was a writer and everyone was a reader. no tv or other entertainment to compete with it yet. everyone was dying for more stories. nowadays you have a billion trust fund kids doing mfas and just everyone and their mother writing a novel, yet not that many ppl read, especially good literature. the ppl who do read read fantasy or romance or other genre fiction. it's sad.

wtf there's better writers that didn't make jack shit while they were alive.. he was one of the few who made a ton.. writing a few short stories for hundreds of thousands of dollars.. lol. that would be unthinkable today.

Then Hemingway obviously, but he made a ton too. All the bros from that era had nice lives. Was a good time to be a writer.

Kafka obviously never published when living.. Hunger artist is better than any of fitzgeralds short stories

Is it not possible for a modern Hemingway to come about and enjoy a comparable life? What do you think is the comparable entertainment medium today, if there is one?

I don't think so. All these bros made living writing short stories while working on novels. Now there's zero market for short stories

it's kind of weird that we are collectively wealthier than ever but it's a shit time to be an artist. movies/video games really wrecked painting/writing.
