If you're a midlevel associate dealing with Directors or junior VPs at clients, you are supposed to get friendly with them. They're in your cohort, so the idea is that they'll eventually end up as executives at the client or in other companies and will be in the position to send you business.
Of course this model has become infinitely more difficult when Boomers decided they would never retire and would horde all executive positions until death. |

Also, the computerization of the field has made it harder to. Clients just email you when they need something.
