My TL;DR version, which is largely informed by Drury, is as follows. Philosophers going back as far as Socrates have been secret atheists/nihilists, but they have concealed their atheism/nihilism by engaging in esotericism. They concealed their atheism/nihilism because they thought society would go to the dogs without religion. Machiavelli was the first to really break with the esoteric tradition by speaking certain esoteric truths openly in his own name, thereby initiating modernity. The Straussians think modernity is a mistake, and the ancients were right about the effect of philosophy on the body politic. |

He seems more concerned with what Machiavelli was trying to do, whereas I don't really give a fuck about Machiavelli himself and am more interested in his ideas. I think most of our notions of what constitutes "government ethics" descend from Machiavelli. For example, the notion that leaders should avoid the appearance of impropriety (actual impropriety unnecessary to violate the rule). I don't think you can analyze ethics issues or propose meaningful ethics reforms without heeding Machiavelli at least somewhat, so I find actual utility that improves human lives in this "evil" that Strauss supposedly castigates.
