he was a pretty good stylist. his actual message was kind of deranged shitlib nonsense, but it was usually well-written. if you want kooky black writers from the 60's/70's, though, ishmael reed is a lot wackier and more entertaining.

What of his shit have you read?

By Ishmael Reed are you talking about Mumbo Jumbo?

I think Invisible Man is by far the best black novel written.

invisible man is interesting but kind of didactic about the whole racism thing. if you mean baldwin, i've read a bunch of his essays and parts of Another Country and some other novels of his.

the thing about baldwin is that he has been WAY surpassed in the 'zany gay black guy' genre by samuel delaney, who has completely fucking berserk novels like dhalgren and valley of the nest of spiders which are off-the-charts nuts. similar to gravity's rainbow, but far gayer.

I would say it is far more than simply didactic about the whole racism thing and goes well beyond the typical black experience.

You seem 180, pumo. Have you read Go Tell it on The Mountain? It's not zany negro shit at all, it's basically classical literature in the vein of a Faulkner or O'Connor. Have you read much shit by Richard Wright?

i've read some wright, but i haven't read much of 'mountain' yet. in terms of oldschool black novels, my personal favorite is probably 'Cane' by a guy named Jean Toomer, back during the harlem renaissance days. he was one of the early proto-postmodern writers who combined poetry and written narratives together into a single story.

also, the kennedy brothers used to call james baldwin 'Martin Luther Queen' because of his over-the-top gayness.

Cane is 1 fucking 80 although I think the parts in NYC lag behind the earlier scenes in the Deep South.

Toomer was pretty white though, wasn't he.

yeah, he was mixed. but he did influence a lot of later guys like amiri baraka or the 'last poets.' speaking of which, their spoken-word albums are pretty interesting historical documents 50+ years later:

Can you rate Flannery O'Connor man?

Have you read the Confessions of Nat Turner, man?

flannery makes me sad for a lot of reasons. she was a good writer, but also an undesirable woman who never got to enjoy BEING a woman very much, and developed a dour view of a lot of aspects of life. which was entirely fair for her, but which had a constant sense of tragedy around most of what she wrote.

styron was an interesting guy, and was apparently a depressive. i haven't read all that much of his stuff other than darkness visible, but i remember reading that the nat turner novel was partly influenced by the book 'Mandingo' (not the later film), which makes sense. i HAVE read most of that, and it's very lurid and angry.

She is the consummate artist. A woman whose life revolves around marriage, travel, and other frivolous affairs could never possess the insight she clearly developed.

You really need to read Confessions, brother. His imagining of Turner's life is completely intricately woven.
