people will think you're dumber if you're nice to them, both online and offline

this is something i've realized as i've made a consistent effort over the past few years to be kinder to people and with my words. it also rings true (unfortunately) when i think about the past and how i've considered people who are pleasant vs. people who are always bitter and snarky. i used to let cruel, cutting words fly without giving a second thought to how they could possibly make other people feel. it's much easier to do that online than offline, i should note.
i'm not implying that i'm always nice or that i'm smart, by the way. i'm speaking in relative terms.

It's true, but that's always been the cost. You can be almost universally well-liked and considered average or dumb, or you can be considered smart but mostly disliked or even outright hated.
I think the ego tends to make you want to pick the latter, but if you look at people who actually go far and succeed it's the former. There are plenty of smart people who are smart enough to hide their intelligence strategically, and they go far with it.
