At 10 million you are going to be just fine in a bad market but you'll have to cut a lot of the luxuries temporarily. Assuming I don't touch my portfolio at all and only spend my new lower salary, is this a reliable way to get my total up to 2MM in a few years? Or am I better off just buying and holding? |

So yeah, you can and I would say should be buying and holding. BUT on top of that you can do puts & calls, so sell covered calls on your holdings (thus not using your buying power) and puts on lower risk shit like ETFs (I often play the ARKs) or index options (eg, SPX). You can lower the buying power and risk by doing spreads, so buying a low strike put and selling a slightly higher (eg, sell ARKK $80 and buy the $75 --> you're only risking the $5 spread, so on 10 contracts just $5k at risk and that's the most buying power you'll lose --> you make the difference in premium as your profit potential). I tend to do spreads on high IV shit like TSLA and high BP users like SPX options. Look into portfolio margin - ask your broker. Makes a fucking WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. Basically you're fully invested and just using that as collateral without paying a nickel for the extra margin that juices you 1.5-2%/month (depends on risk). Date: September 16th, 2021 6:16 PM Author: charcoal exhilarant ticket booth depends on what you're writing those calls - if super high IV shit then yeah, potentially, since you won't be able to "roll" for a credit too often if it truly pops. almost my entire portfolio is in ETFs, so these are much much less volatile - no chance of a massive pop on earnings, no M&A, etc. If there's a strong rally then I just "roll" up & out the calls, so buy back my sold calls and sell new ones at higher strike & later expiration. Never had anything called away since starting this and rolled, usually for a credit, when tested a couple of times. For individual stocks - I almost always close the options beforehand to avoid the massive pop/drop (sometime I have puts too), so the risk of losing gains is super low (unless a massive upgrade or M&A etc). You could almost always roll for a credit if it's not super deep ITM, maybe the expiration though will have to be further out. Also, my individial stock positions are often a deep ITM call (LEAPS), and I sell short-duration calls against them --> poor man's covered call. The long call would thus POP hard as well, very very hard (so like my ABNB position is now getting close to the $170C Oct1 expiration, and I am thinking of rolling it soon to Nov then, all for a credit; in the meantime, my LEAPS on it is up a ton thanks to the recent rally, more than offsetting the short call).
