There's definitely a "breakage" number that younger millennials and Gen Z are testing, though, thus the decade plus long employer preference for business degrees and STEM degrees, and marketing and advertising for women and homos. Liberal Arts people who don't have a connection (and therefore a personal relationship at stake if they accept a position and then suck or make trouble) can be hired, but it's very rare these days that a straight white person, especially a straight white male, would ever be hired without connections and with only a liberal arts degree on his resume. AA/URM and white woman diversity mascots are a different story, and frankly there's a lot of room for continued improvement in identifying the less annoying/risky ones. Date: September 21st, 2021 1:13 PM Author: Slippery racy institution It definitely serves a gate keeping function, but I think it has less to do with brand name/networking and more to do with the fact that a college degree implies that you are capable of learning and remembering new things, meeting deadlines, writing clearly, and generally being a competent adult rather than a fuckup waste of space. Employers think that if you have a college degree, you will show up to work on time and be able to learn how to create pivot tables in Excel.
That said, anyone who takes out hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt for an undergraduate degree is insane. You can accomplish the same thing by going to community college for two years and then transferring to a cheap state school. You should be able to graduate with like $20k-$30k in debt maximum, which is almost certainly a good investment. |

Date: September 21st, 2021 11:17 AM Author: translucent laser beams jew idk your experience. among my cohort, we all thought it was 180 at the time, because we were free to fuck a lot of sluts, stay up all night, and live like adult children. That felt pretty cool.
But we also all got pretty cynical. As seniors in high school we believed in things and were all pretty rooted. As seniors in college, we were hardened against life, confused. We used black humor and hedonism as shields. "This party fucking rocks!", but we had no real place in the world and we knew it.
So it was on to wage-slaving or grad school to search out MOAR status signals, and some sense of definition as "Im rich" or "Im a lolyer" or "check out this office".
Thing is, we had status in our hometowns as X's son, as Y's boyfriend... and we just lost all of that. In place of being X's son, we got a GPA. In place of Y's boyfriend, we got a dozen hook-ups.
What a shitty trade.
We shouldve interned with our dads, married a 17yo, worked on a house in the neighborhood, become involved in local governance.
And if some of us were meant to be great artists or fancy lawyers in the BIG city, well... fine. Maybe even some of us should have gone to Harvard for a fancy degree. But by and large the default option should have been no-college. |
