Oh it definitely uses more gas, sometimes applies too much acceleration going up hill, etc. Even more so with adaptive CC when it applies brakes more frequently than a driver would.

In practice, it saves gas overall imo. But if you know the area that you're driving and can shrewdly let off the gas down hills, and lose speed going uphill & sloooowly regain it, you'd save gas imo.

cruise control is stupid bullshit. the only time it's even remotely useful is if you're driving 10+ hours down I95 or some shit and you get foot cramps. other than that it's just some another piece of stupid shit you have to worry about.

obviously no one is using cruise control to go 25 mph down county streets. it is 180 on a highway like 1-80 or something thru nebraska. even i-95 is too congested to make any use of it

I've tried it and sometimes use it. i've had 8 cars total in my life and they're all had CC and I've used each at some point. the weirdness of having to change how you normally drive in order to give your foot a break isn't worth it like 98% of the time.

driving with pedals 99% of the time then CC 1% of the time just ends up being a pain in the butthole even if the 1% method is objectively easier in that circumstance.

I always think of car features that would actually be useful but that no one cares/thinks about

For instance, I'm in a construction zone, it's raining, getting dark, I want to change lanes, but.... would I really see someone coming without their lights on? Give me a fucking Camera to scan the surrounding area or something.

A "luxury car" should also just have ungodly hear/ac, windshield and rear defrost. But no one thinks of this, they just put ipads in the center console and use more aesthetic Plastics in the interior.

That's what I'm saying. AC, heat, pothole smoothing. This is the "American" approach to luxury but boomers laughed at it from the 80s onward. But for irl, 1,) you want the snow to melt off the windshield asap in the ruinous American winter, 2.) you want a big-assed engine while your AC runs while you idle in traffic so it doesn't make the engine start vibrating the entire car, 3.) Roads are straight, there are No Turns irl. Boomers ruin everything imho.

I'm talking about when I'm at a dead stop and I want to dart out but there are Cars coming. So if I had lane assist it would beep as someone rear-ended me.

It just seems like there should be some kind of Periscope given how many blind spots cars have now.

recently got a loaded up lexus. honestly, it's 180. here are the quirks and features I really appreciate:

- adaptive cruise control and carplay as discussed

- heads up display is great, can keep eyes on the road and it'll show you basically everything you need

- when you approach the car there are these little lights under the door handle that illuminate, looks and feels 180.

- heated and ventilated seats, the latter is a must going forward

- seats are extremely comfortable and pull forward (along with the steering wheel) to the position i've set, then pull back to allow ease of entry and exit

- wife and kids appreciate the panoramic sunroof

- cameras everywhere, they really do help

- wireless carplay is 18000000000

but my vehicles have hardly any features, the ones they do have i use.

i currently have no mirrors, doors, or top on my jeep. still drive it 2x a week.

my truck does not have rear defrost, i hate that. and as an offset the back window does not open or vent.

on the other hand, i rarely have repair bills on 13/18 year old vehicles.

i do use:

-heated/cooled seat

-heated steering wheel (wish it cooled in summer)

-regular cruise control

-the "look up dummy" warning bell/auto stop when someone stops short in front of you, it does give you an extra few milliseconds

-the motors on the side mirrors are nice in tight garages

-the top view camera where it shows my car and then actual camera images all around is very helpful for parking and parallel parking

things I do not use:

-adaptive cruise control - it is always too timid and brakes too early

-CD player (I maybe played a kid's CD once, have never played one for adults)

-switching the car from "sport" to "comfort" to "performance" settings, etc.

-lane assist - again, it's too sensitive

-onstar/nav stuff, though i like to have the map as the background while driving to stay awake

Adaptive cruise is 180. Also great: heated and cooled seats, power passenger mirror, keyless entry. I'm also very happy to have emergency braking, though I hope I never find out how well it works. One should not need a backup camera but it's useful nonetheless.

Lane keep is trash, auto dimming headlights suck, and Android auto is an abortion and built in nav is somehow even worse.

My wife's number 1 requested feature in any car is a panoramic moon roof, which we then use about 15 minutes per year.

These are actually important on Porsches. Sport Plus in a Panamera GTS is a world of difference from normal driving. It completely remaps the fueling and transmission settings. It’s comparatively bullshit on a Chevy Malibu or Toyota Corolla, though.

Even old-style cruise control was a godsend for road trips or any driving on highways with light traffic. Adaptive cruise control solves this problem.

If everyone used cruise control on highways, passing would be much easier and most of the traffic could stay in the right lane and the left lane would be exclusively a passing lane.

Instead what you have is some DrakeMallard-like dumbass non-cruisemo going at 75mph. You've got your cc set at 77. So you try to pass the fucktard. That's when he fluctuates to 80. So you now have to decide between getting back behind him or accelerating yourself to 83 so you can get infront of him. You get back behind him and he fluctuates to 70. Fuck these non-cruise-mos.

Launch control. I am not putting a clutch in that thing any sooner than I have to.

I have one car with adaptive cruise and it is 180, but otherwise whatever was standard on a mid-90s truck is fine with me. I guess heated seats are nice as women like them, but I never use them, power anything breaks IMHO.

Oh, I do also like auto dimming mirrors. But they fail after a while IME. I like intermittent wipers, but the adaptive wipers are dogshit that wipe too often.

I think all the tech is ruining vehicles. I always buy the cheapest base model available to avoid it.

Blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert when backing up are 180. Everything else is utter flame including lane keep and adaptive cruise. Heated seats are flame. Cooled seats are 180 but you only need them with leather seats and you only need leather if you have kids because they would destroy cloth seats but cloth seats PWN leather in every other way.

I could write a fucking book on this.

My Porsches have a “jukebox” function where I can transfer lossless files to a hard drive in the car and play them from the head unit. I have 1 USB stick with some lossless albums I downloaded years ago and I never give a fuck to update this stupid shit.

Ditto for Aha radio and stupid ass Porsche Connect/in-car WiFi. I don’t need to see what my oil level and temp are when I’m on vacation, and I can’t use it for actual useful shit like remote starting to warm my seats. A 5G hotspot is way more useful than car-WiFi too.

Air suspension lowering for rear only - I use this twice a year to lower my SUV to make pulling a jet ski easier, but it’s otherwise useless. I don’t use it to lower the tailgate 3 inches when I have a few bags of groceries, as intended. (This is different than the full suspension adjustment, which I use often; it’s a switch that just lowers the rear half of the suspension to make loading easier.)

The head unit GPS is now fucking useless, although my newest Porsche and Audi at least allow me to use google maps. Waze with apple play is always better.

Voice command is stupid on Porsche & Audi, but getting a bit better. It looks like Mercedes is at least going towards an Amazon-like system.

Night vision stuff is bullshit. I paid $2,500 to supposedly be warned about deer and pedestrians, but it’s fucking useless in all but pitch black darkness and is a pretty big distraction.

HUDs are not a bad idea in principle, but they are rendered completely useless by polarized sunglasses.

The aggressive lane departure systems that actually push the steering wheel (like on Audi) are terrible. They actually make me feel MORE likely to crash than just driving on my own.

Old one (only 3-5 years old) claims to have traffic info but it is SPS. The list of destinations is based on some system that needs updating and not the internet as one would expect. My more recent car has google results but it’s awkward to try to choose google (vs factory GPS) and about half as convenient as just using waze through the Apple CarPlay.
