This was heyday Square, coming in hot off years with mega hits like Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger. Final Fantasy VII was deep in development and would release the next year. Square was at the top of its game and pumping out god tier JRPG content.
Then you have one of the most iconic franchises in gaming history in Mario. A safe, traditional JRPG would have lost a lot of the feel and flavor of Mario; imagine a cheap sprite reskin of Final Fantasy. So Square decided to bring the classic Mario platforming into the mix by putting Mario in 3D spaces and incorporating ideas like coin blocks and jumping instead of having a flat sprite roam in cardinal directions. Then they stuffed it to the gills with Mario flavor and iconography while also introducing new characters so it wasn’t just another “let’s save the Princess” Bowser-beater. In a surprise twist, Bowser even joins your team after he gets booted out of his own castle!

It had active blocking and striking, the rythmic Mario Jump attack, frame-timing Geno’s attack for 9999 crits, lots of gear and big optional post-game bosses ala Final Fantasy’s Weapons.
And if you wanted to 100% the red coins some of them were literally missable if you didn’t perfectly execute the platforming like riding a toad’s head to a secret ledge and jumping at just the right moment. Games today are terrified to lock out content like that. |
