Forcing someone to get clean doesn't make them STAY clean, and no one stays clean unless THEY want it. You can put a person in a 45 day detox program but unless they're fully committed to being sober they will be out on the street sucking dick for dope on the 46th day.

Look at what we do to people. We get people hooked on pharmaceuticals, a not insignificant number of which simply took their medication as prescribed. From that, doctors make money, and pharmaceutical companies make money. This money comes from the person who becomes addicted, but it also comes from Medicaid, as poor people have their meds paid by the government. People make billions on this scheme.
So then, a responsible person understand that they are addicted to opiods, so they go to rehab. Again, you have rehab doctors being paid by either the addict or the government. Millions upon millions is paid on this phase.
An irresponsible person, or a person hopelessly addicted, moves on to heroin. Now you have street gangs, etc. making money, with this money going God knows where (but I wouldn't be surprised to find the money coming back into the government).
After getting hooked on heroin, we have the methadone clinics and other government services that deal with homeless people. Millions upon million.
From there, we have the police (who get funding to fight crime, crime that addicts are committing) and jails (who get funding for having convicts). Lots of money there. Not only that, but these homeless just destroy cities, leaving their filth everywhere, creating a need for police and government services. The government justifies it's existence because you "need" it and the more you need it the better (and you need a lot of government help when you are surrounded by homeless people living outside your front door).
This entire system is protected by a political system that has zero incentive to do anything about this problem, because pharmaceutical companies make billions off this racket and, frankly, the more miserable people are the more likely they are to vote democrat, and democrats bristle at the idea that this system is in some way immoral. I remember some county in Kentucky make it illegal to sell ephedrine over the counter (in a county that was getting destroyed by meth), and state politicians stepped in because they said it was just "cold medicine."
So we have a system that is built to fuck our citizens in every possible way for financial gain. There is not one level of this that actually looks out for our citizens well being.
The freedom you talk about is the freedom for companies and the government to destroy and kill US citizens for profit and without any consequences.
Not flame the Taliban method of "here's 45 days of rehab the next step is a bullet" is probably more humane for the addict than what we do. |
