i don't know why so many modern military folks have not figured out that there is no way to defeat an insurgency in the modern world. we can defeat other organized militaries and nations that will surrender. but you cannot defeat an enemy that refuses to surrender without some pretty brutal shit. up until ww2 that is how insurgencies were defeated. a lot of innocent people die as you flush the insurgents out. that is impossible today now that the realities of war are broadcast 24/7 in real time. |

in countries where the military is less beholden to the people, or where the people are more apt to tolerate brutality, than defeating insurgencies is possible. |
