Explain to me like I'm 5 why the Electoral College is necessary

Everyone lived in one state their entire lives, traveling to another state took a day's time and states had real "identities" that needed to be preserved. That is, Florida had rights vis. a vis Alabama and so forth (yes I know these weren't part of the 13 colonies).
But now people aren't really citizens of state s, they're just Americans. Everyone moves around and you can travel from state to state in a few hours. I have lived infive states in my lifetime; was I a different person in each of those states? Did I deserve my vote to be weighted more heavily based on which state I was in?
1 vote per person is a hallowed principle in most people's minds; explain what is so important as to make us violate that principle in favor of a system that gives people more of a vote based on where they choose to plant their feet come voting day. (I I live in Alaska in January my vote is worth a shitton but if I move to Arizona by November that worth is divided in half).
And for those go think the state's ARE desperate sovereigns deserving of some consideration why isn't the Senate enough?

Secondly, the margin of victory in most presidential elections is large enough that a swing in the electoral votes of small states like Wyoming or North Dakota, even collectively, won’t change the outcome of the election. This renders the votes there basically worthless. The voters of Wyoming get to allocate a 3-elector block, which will have no impact on the election. California voters get to allocate a 55-elector block, which absolutely will impact the election. No one campaigns in Wyoming/Idaho/Utah/South Dakota, and when they do occasionally make a layover there, it’s to discuss issues that appeal to voters in California/New York/Texas/Florida.
Lastly, once the election is over, because those small states have so little political power, the issues of the voters there are ignored. Despite being “over represented” the populations of these small states usually have policies forced upon them by voters in California and New York (I.e. wild horses in Nevada, wolves in Wyoming, national monuments in Utah, etc.), rather than vice versa, which is regularly implied by political opinion writers. The issues cared about by voters in California, New York, Texas, and Florida are the issues that dominate the political processes.
