It was an absolutely flawless film.
I didn't really enjoy it.

The Last Duel is much better.
Dune is just the culmination of the latest glossy, soulless 21st century action movie

costumes were terrible and looked the same for every house/race. Why not follow the book?
The acting was awful and I don't know why I am supposed to like any of the characters.
The set was so bland.
Why am I supposed to care if Duncan lives or dies? Why is he even in the movie in th first place?

it puts Arrakis back under Harkonnen ownership, thats #1, it means Paul is now Duke, #2, and it allows Leto an attack of the Harkonnen family #3. its not overly emotional.
if i remember correctly paul emotes for a short time then completely gets over it as he becomes the leader of the coming jihad.
--paul killing jamis is a bigger emotional event for paul than his father's death

i liked it quite a bit as a good adaptation of the book.
but i can def see how a non-bookmo would not be impressed or entertained.

Dune opened to $40M against reported production and marketing costs of $300M. Industry media are frantically spinning this as a win ("Highest opening ever for Villeneuve! Highest opening for an HBO Max day-and-date streaming movie! We only expected $35M!") but the brutal truth is that if the studio knew a couple years ago that that would be the number, it wouldn't have had a prayer of being greenlit. For comparison, a few other opening weekends from 2021:
Black Widow: $80M
Venom 2: $90M
No Time to Die: $55M (this was widely seen as a weak print for a blockbuster, even given Chinkflu effects)
Halloween Kills: $50M
Part One opened to 20% less than the 12th Halloween movie . HBO Max movies have also been notorious for brutal 70% second week drops, so there's a very real chance this movie (which, again, was supposed to be one of the biggest tentpoles of the year and dominate the holiday box office and spawn a film trilogy and multiple TV spinoffs) will fail to reach $100M domestically, and gross less than than movies like Jungle Cruise and Free Guy.
Hard to say how much of that is Warner's catastrophically dumb handling of the release, and how much is that making a Dune movie is about as advisable as trying to turn Afghanistan into a globohomo democracy, but at this point the most compelling drama is whether Warner wants to torch another 9 figures trying to keep this ship afloat a few more years or cut their losses, especially since the 2nd half of the story is going to require a lot of expensive effects and action scenes, so slashing the budget isn't really on the table. I guess they still plan to make 3 more Fantastic Beasts movies even though the last one shit the bed, so maybe they just hate money or expect a Fed bailout or something.

I don't understand simultaneous release on HBO Max. Of course box office numbers are going to get murdered when you do that
Looks like it's grossed $220M counting international

I'm very curious what the formula is for what a "hit" movie or tv show on a streaming service.
Like, if I watch 12 hours of content, is my $12 just distributed $1/hour to what I watched and then just compared to the licensing cost?
8 of those 12 hours are usually classic movies from their catalog, which probably cost the least.
But it's obviously not that simple because they're spending their ass off on original expensive programming to get growth. Apple+ for example is making some really original shows, a lot of which will fail, but one is Ted Lasso. And Ted Lasso is probably responsible for all of their growth, which locks in a new user for 1/3/6 months, with some decline curve.
