covid exposed that the dominant culture in nyc is one of the most authority-respecting, shame-enforcing, rule-worshipping of our entire nation.
bracketing whether that is a good or bad way to be, it's contrary to the history of NYC from at least the draft riots to the "ungovernable" culture of the late 20th C.
NEW YORK FUCKING CITY is more obedient and compliant than little bible belt towns

That is not what I am saying. It is different from Hollywood being controlled by libs. That was always the case. It is more the issue of subversiveness. Like the late 70s you had a LA, dopesmoking, cokesnorting, excess to the excess music scene. Hippies, nerds, and gays dominated. Disco, singer-songwriters, etc. Nobody thinks they were conservative-- they were a lot like today's shitlibs-- peace and love, swinging, drugs. This produced the backlash of punks, who-- at least a lot of them-- were NOT shitlib in any conventional sense. Johnny Rotten roared against abortion for goddsakes. The punk scene was full of all sorts of weird transgressive stuff-- e.g., the Nazi aesthetic was big.
What I am saying is we are ripe for another movement like that. Stand--up comics who LOOK to offend the dominant culture of "diversity". Musicians who don't make AdCouncil spots for the vaccine. etc.

in retrospect, "counterculture" should always be highly suspect, as it has to pass the gauntlet of corporations. Whether it's hippies or punk rock or gangsta rap or MTV or whatever.
It's usually branded "youth culture" with the insinuation that youth are independent from mainstream adult values. This unravels when you see that teenagers are an invented concept and didnt exist before the 1940s. Teens / youths / rebels are only just a weaponized demographic that have been created to destabilize families.
There never was a counterculture that came from youth. It came from culture-makers that wanted your kids.

i'm gonna kinda disagree on this, but only kinda. i think there is a segment of the population--very mfh and recently brooklyn based--that are like this and have an outsized voice in the mainstream.
after that, you float around the bronx, queens, most parts of brooklyn and definitely staten island they really truly dgaf about lockdowns or any of that shit.
with that said, it's one thing to keep your bodega open during all this. it's another to protest en masse against boot to your neck rule which they didn't do.

ill put it like this. when I was a kid the street meaning of saying someone was from brooklyn was that they might punch you. any group of brooklynites gathered would call out "brooklynnn!!" to communicate that they were going to do whatever the fuck they wanted. if it rang out at a school dance or something, it meant a brawl or a riot could erupt.
the most lasting image of brooklyn I have now is of cell phone videos capturing worried women and twinky men calling down from their windows to chastise people for leaving their homes.
i dont know what you call that metric

You're right but I think you're missing the forest for the trees. It's not just about NYC.
Liberals -- forever the counterculture, the "fuck all authority" bunch, have become the "follow the rules!" group. This is bizarre.
Some other poaster summed this up well when they mentioned Rage Against the Machine requiring vaccinations at their shows. The band that sings "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" and is named RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE is now basically singing "Heck yes, I'll do what you tell me!"

Wrong framing. White Christian America has been undermined for over a century, and lately the degree of subversion has passed the tipping point.
Conservatives are not "the new counter-culture". They're the new kulaks and they're getting purged from every major institution in the country.

NYC is back to normal basically. At the garden the other day and not a mask in sight just happy new Yorkers enjoying the blueshirts and some beers.
Meanwhile you raged online.

Yeah and everyone there over the age of 12 had to show someone a personal health record indicating they were vaccinated. And a government-issued ID with a matching name on it. (See below from the MSG website.) New Yorkers in the 80s would have given a big fuck you to this kind of lunacy.

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements and Ticketing Information
Are there vaccination requirements for attending an event?
Yes, per government mandates for attending indoor events at venues such as The Garden, all guests age 12 and older will need to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination, which means you’ve had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Guests may also show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination, meaning the day of your event is at least 14 days after your final vaccine dose, which, depending on the type of vaccine, may be one dose or two. Fully vaccinated guests are not required to wear a mask. Everyone else will be required to wear a mask while in The Garden, except while actively eating or drinking.
Please note that some events have their own requirements, including that all guests age 12 and older be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or children ages 5 to 11 provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test. In addition to this, government mandates, venue protocols and event requirements are subject to change. Therefore, it is important for you to check your event page on our website to confirm details of your specific event. View calendar.
Please note that due to NBA protocols, at New York Knicks games there are additional requirements and restrictions for some ticket holders with seats located in close proximity to the court. Click here to learn more.
Please also note that at New York Knicks and New York Rangers games there may be additional requirements and restrictions for some ticket holders in specific seat locations which will be communicated directly to those ticket buyers.
Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or negative test result needs to be directly from the healthcare provider that performed the vaccination or test, and can be displayed:
Through a physical copy
A photo on your smartphone
Using a mobile app. We ask that you download and log in to apps in advance so you have access to your proof before arriving at the venue.
For all options, anyone 18 years or older will need to also present a government-issued ID such as driver’s license or passport. Those younger than 18 may use a government-issued ID, birth certificate, social security card, school ID, or locally-issued ID.
