Let's say the majority is capital gains, so it would be like $6 million after taxes. You have a job that pays ~$400k/year (pre-tax in a high tax jurisdiction), more in good years. You kind of enjoy the work, but it feels like a grind sometimes. You're in your mid-30s, and don't really have any transferable skills.
Would you quit, and if so, what would you do with your life afterwards?

only quit if you have something better to do - ie something that youre passionate about, something that is rewarding in a way your current job isnt.
$400k is a lot of money and youd be crazy to just walk away from it. assets are inflated right now, there might be a huge crash at some point and you will def be glad u have a job if/when that happens.
most richmos that i know who quit their jerbs are miserable because they didnt quit to do anything

Did you have kids? No.
Did you have a boat and live on the ocean? No.
Have you spent almost every day for approximately 1/2 your days on Earth striving in law, whether as a lawyer, student, or clerk? (21 years in law, 43 years old) No, you did not.
So you got bored. I would not.

I've been "unemployed" since November of 2020. Since then I've:
* Got a dog
* Spent 3 months in a foreign country
* Learned how to code and have written several programs, which is something I've wanted to do since college
* Put on 50lb on my bench and 100lb on my deadlift
* Spent more time with my family and friends than ever before
* Worked on being more outgoing (going out more, rec sports, trivia, etc.) which has resulted in several new friends
* Spent 5 weeks driving across America visiting national parks and camping
* Worked on several business ideas that will come to fruition in 2022
* Have gotten better at several hobbies (photography, baking) and taken up new ones
I won't lie, it's easy to fall into lazy spells and then end up doing nothing for a few days. As I was writing the list I started feeling regretful that I didn't do ENOUGH the past year, but in reality if I had a job I would've accomplished none of it.

I would absolutely quit my current job.
I think I would take tomorrow and maybe Thursday off to just do whatever around the house. Exercise, cook meals, clear my head.
Then I'd plan out an actual road trip thing to do next week. And a Holidays trip for my family at the end of month.
I'd start seriously considering what I was going to do with the rest of my life and what kind of ventures to get into and really kick that into gear starting in January.
I'd also go and get some golf lessons.

If I had to sell the assets, pay the taxes and reinvest them, no (but I would still probably be able to retire within the next few years). If the assets were already invested well, I would quit my job immediately and never look back.
To be clear, your personal answer to this question depends entirely on whether you can picture a fulfilling life for yourself without a job. If you can't, then quitting your job (or retiring in general) is probably not for you.

$400K in NYC, LA or SF is ~$225K after taxes. Let's assume it's a chill job, a 10-4 M-F type gig, even though that's highly unlikely. Add a little bit of commuting time and you're at 1,500 hours of "work" per year. That's $150/hr. post tax.
$6MM in a Vanguard account dishing out 6% interest per year is $360K/yr. just in interest. After taxes that's like $250K/yr, just in interest to live off of, without ever touching your principal.
So best case scenario job + pretty bad investment return (only 6%) and you're already making more money in interest than from working.

I'd continue codemoing for fun though. Probably spend my time making minor contributions to random open source projects nobody cares about. Would be 180

Unlike a lot of people I'm great at using my free time, so I could get a lot out of not having any work to do. Would probably travel a ton, then spend a few months reading a ton, and then after a year or two once I got the itch to be active again I'd look for some kind of job I'd derive meaning from with chill hours.
