During the early 2000s (and late 90s), corporations tried to shave down their SG&A expenses by hiring huge numbers of H1B visa Indians. In finance (and consumer goods and retail I presume, though I don’t work in those industries), the Indian workers are brought in to be back office support, not front office. The C-suite execs get pulled from their front office (usually ibankers, sometimes commercial bankers or traders) where there is no career improving “curry bump.” There are lots of good Indian bankers, and for whatever reason, Indian bankers play VERY well in Japan and China, so I’m sure there will be plenty of Indian finance CEOs in the future.

Recently there seems to be less incentive to move to the US, or even directly hire, Indian workers. Barclays opened an office in Mumbai and the cost arbitrage they were trying to achieve evaporated pretty quickly. Goldman gets the same cost savings by moving their back office to SLC Lots of banks hire Indian temp-work services to input data into spreadsheets and make basic slides. Those workers aren’t directly employed by the banks though.
