It absolutely does not. Every single one of those things exists in societies without religion as well and often in even greater amounts. In fact, there are few greater examples of human depravity (violence on an unfathomable scale, poverty including mass famine, forget medicine, human suffering) than China and the USSR during Communism. The problem with a lot of smug atheists is that they think that if you remove religion from the equation the problems they associate with religion will also disappear. This is dumb and not supported by history. Religion gets replaced by worse alternatives and the problems that are supposed to go away remain and may get even worse.

The problem that you're missing is that there's always "religion" even if it doesn't involve a direct diety. Comrade Mao or Stalin can replace God. So the question isn't whether religion is good, it is which religion results in the best society. For one, it is the religion where people like you can say "ha, your Jew on a stick God wasn't even real!" and nothing bad will happen to you other than some dirty looks. In Islam you would be murdered for saying shit about the Prophet Muhammed. If you try to preach in Israel you'll be attacked. Their laws blatantly prefer Jews. And so on. |

at the same time, the "they're missing the point! Religion is about social cohesion! not about truth!" is not tcr. Religion is premised on faith. You can't be a faithless adherent to a religion for your kids or whatever. They'll just see through it anyway. Also existence of multiverses is a plausible alternative explanation. I don't see what value we get from arguments of the form "X proves either A or B" when we have no access to reliable evidence to prove or disprove A or B. |
