people can have different opinions about things. especially something as childish as vidya. ff7r veered too far from the original for me to like it. this is coming from a guy that played each ff6-10 at least 3 times. i was obsessed with ff7 remake kept track of news about it for years.
i might have been able to tolerate the action rpg combat. it's not like i expected them to keep the game completely intact. but the bullshit story changes and "whispers" combined with the new combat made it a non started for me. |

Would I have been happier with a direct remake that followed the plot of the original, turn based battles, and all three discs in one go? Sure, definitely. But you have to take the game for what it is, and it's fantastic. The pure button mash spam of FFXV is gone, giving way to what I think is the best action-based battle system of any jrpg that has tried it. The different characters are all cool and fun to play as and feel very different. The environments and nostalgic moments from the original game were created in painstaking detail. Yes, it's more like going through a theme park ride of FF7 than playing the original FF7, but it's a perfectly executed theme park ride. I'm definitely in the demographic that would be highly inclined to bash what they did, but I can't fault it at all, other than the plot/ending (and even that I can at least get a little bit . . . they were trying to provide that "epic," over the top jrpg narrative and ending). |

the game is definitely a masterpiece, but these open worlders always just get too easy at the end. it seems like every massive game like botw starts out difficult and becomes progressively more easy. shouldn't it be the opposite? i was dying all the time at the beginning. by the end i was unstoppable.
i only got it a couple months ago. i might pick it up again and beat it just to do it. but at this point it just feels like a chore. there's no challenge. |

i just wish they found a way to keep it challenging. i get that the fun of it for most people is exploration. and it's amazing how they found a way to pack content in everywhere. it's truly amazing to just walk around.
but after you master combat and get strong enough, it just felt like i'm checking things off a list. |

The people developing a lot of games have seemingly no regard for the fact that a player gets better at the game as he progresses. There are certain games that really nail the difficulty curve - DKC2, a lot of the better mega man games, mario 3 - and these stand out. Note that none of these are RPGs or Zelda-esque games. They have to allow for the fact that some players will want to rush through without collecting very much imo. You can go right to Ganon the second you get off the starting area iirc.
With that said, combat in BOTW and a lot of Zelda games in general is pretty trivial. The challenge comes from the puzzles and exploration/crafting and such provide a fun factor as well. |

i'm not going to sit here and pretend like i have any solution to it, either. people want open world games. i got botw knowing exactly what it was. but it seems very hard to program an increasing or even consistent difficulty into these types of games. when you have the option to go anywhere you want as soon as you start the game really doesn't have a lot of solutions for increasing difficulty. beyond stuff like scaling enemies. which really doesn't do anything, because they all have the same move sets. giving them bigger numbers doesn't do much. |

Far from perfect but it is an absolute treat that a cRPG like it exists and offers somebody who wants it a full-bore tabletop adventure with more depth than any normal human could ever be expected to master. I didn't come anywhere near completing it but would have loved having a game like it around when I was 16 to just get lost in for an entire summer.
Hades is probably the pinnacle of the classic roguelike genre. |

It's an amazing game but maybe the only one I've run into so far where I really felt the effects of being too damn old.
Hades does maybe the best job I've seen of a new-ish game being appealing to a genre with a hardcore fanbase (which roguelikes definitely have) and Joe McMassmarket. One of the few modern games that I legitimately can't think of a type of person who wouldn't enjoy it. |

cb2077 was better than people gave it credit for. still pretty fucking buggy. suffers from the typical "game gets ridiculously easy later on" that most open worlders suffer from. especially if you're autistic about min/maxing. my netrunner build just one shotted entire bases without an enemy ever seeing me.
i got control for free from epic but haven't played it yet. |

There have only been a handful of games in the history of gaming that are comparable (Witcher 3 and RDR 2 among them). It illustrates the best of what gaming has to offer as a storytelling medium.
It's a shame what happened to the game but CDPR deserves the criticism; it made a fundamentally stupid decision to release the game on Xbox One/PS4 for financial reasons, and stuck to that plan even when it required the team to hamstring features/systems and work 10x harder to develop things for an end result that was objectively terrible. At the same time CDPR spent years leaning hard into the hype train and let its fanbase believe Cyberpunk was some kind of Ur game that would be infinitely deep, customizable, and replayable with every feature seen in every open world game in the last decade dialed to 11. That in turn created a feedback loop where the team would constantly feature creep new systems only to run into the Xbox/PS4 problem, get bogged down, and have to cut the system way back so it would function. |

maybe it's because they had to work 10x harder making the game work on older shit that they didn't have time for these features. idk. |

The team has talked about spending tons of time optimizing the data streaming to keep the city running on Xbox/PS4 which had slow hard drives and tiny pink RAM caches. Beyond a modest efficiency point that's all wasted dev time.
So they decide to add cops as a feature ala GTA's crime system. But the Xbox/PS4 don't have the capability to create and track a bunch of roaming police NPCs that simply exist off screen. So what do they do? When you get a 'wanted' level the game just spawns a cop. And the Xbox/PS4 can't hold any sizeable chunk of the game in memory so the cop spawns basically on top of the player and engages. Hence stupid shit like cops spawning on rooftops of buildings. I don't know for sure that this was the root cause but given the dev chops at CDPR I have to imagine bullshit like this played a big role. |

cb2077 is probably the biggest example of "hard at first, trivially easy later" problem that almost all open worlders have. at the highest difficulty level i was dying constantly to stray bullets during the first few hours. later on nothing could stop me.
i killed adam smasher just by looking at him and pressing a single button. i'd find that i accidentally killed bosses and minibosses because my hacks spread to them. i also remember having one of the smart guns and one of my hacks would trigger automatically on crits. so any automatic smart gun with a high rate of fire would trigger a hack dozens of times and i wouldn't even have to aim anywhere near them. |

Date: January 9th, 2022 1:55 PM Author: primrose indecent round eye The Mako has a boost now and worms have more varied attacks (they lead their shots really well and they have a phase where they go underground and you have to shoot a bunch of their tentacles). The worm fights are definitely harder/more interactive but it's still the same fight every time
There's also no more penalty for killing stuff in the Mako, you get the full exp every time
Exploring with the Mako is still a slog but it goes by a little faster now with the boost |

when a quest market appears over every npc you need to talk to, the game just plays itself. you don't even have to read shit. go to the next quest marker. spam through the convo. go to the next. rinse and repeat. |

it's cool to hate on Skyrim now but there's a reason it's still played and people loved it when it came out and it still holds up. very good combination of atmosphere/art design/score. |
