He was supposedly a savant capable of reading over 500 pages an hour, yet I never read anything insightful by him. In a book on the great novels, he said the primary purpose of reading them was to meet interesting people. I had to read that passage again because it was jarring to discover that a giant of literary studies so deeply missed something so fundamental about literature.

I'm not being edgy and cool. I'm genuinely curious. Because I've read a number of his writings, including a good many of his essays in the Modern Critical Interpretations series, plus one or two full-length books, and I'm struggling to remember one intellectual gem from any of them.

I re-read Lear fairly recently, so I was intrigued to see what insights Bloom might have.

I've gone through the entirety of the ten or so bloated paragraphs, and not only has Bloomed to say anything insightful or interesting in that span, he's also managed to be completely wrong:

> because no person, not even Lear, is redeemed in this harshest of dramas.

tbf it was an appreciation thread, not analysis.

A word on why Bloom is wrong. The audience goes from feeling superior to Lear to completely identifying with him and grieving with him when Cordelia dies. That is very clearly redemption.

I don’t think being better thought of by the audience is redemption. Redemption would be a new birth of meaning when instead all we see is dissolution and loss of meaning

Lear is redeemed because he is transformed by fully confronting his hamartia. That he is forced to do so by overwhelming circumstances underscores the difficulty of confronting our inner shadows. That he does so too late to save his daughter is a reminder to the audience that our time is limited. Neither takes away from his redemption.

It's mindboggling to me that a guy with an IQ of 290 failed to grasp something this obvious.
