But when those super rich pass on their wealth and 50 yrs of compound interest becomes 100-200 yrs, then you create totally unfair advantages for people who literally did nothing.
I propose a wealth tax at death. You can leave your direct ancestors enough $ so that they remain 1%er (so a few million), but beyond that your assets get transferred to an estate which benefits something like US infrastructure or something else that has wide bipartisan support. |

While it’s mildly frustrating to see Bezos play games with reported income, I don’t really find it frustrating because it’s just a function of a timing mismatch. His GAAP accounting books would show a large tax liability of some form. He has to pay those taxes eventually; it’s just a matter of when.
There are a couple of loopholes that he can use to avoid some taxes forever, which I guess you could argue should be closed. He can take out loans using his shares as collateral and then die. That would allow him to never realize capital gains, and his heir would receive a stepped up basis and could then pay down the liabilities without capital gains taxes. But that is just closing a loophole, not requiring a wealth tax. |
