that said, this wasn't a hard victory for me. he was carrying a standard model large griptilian with a black handle and black coated blade. It's oafish and something that was nice maybe 10 or so years ago. I think it's been discontinued tbh.

Excluding truly one of a kind hand made custom jewel encrusted show pieces, there is the phenomenon of the "hype knife" often used to style on people on social media. There are levels to it though.

At first glance, there's really nothing special about this knife. It's pretty ordinary looking. However, an extremely influential youtuber reviewer fell in love with it and hyped it so much after it was discontinued that used versions on the secondary market now routinely sell for $800 - $1,000. Having one of these is a huge status symbol.
The same is true of the Grimsmo Norseman, which is objectively a very ugly knife. The community fell in love with it (also in part as a result of the aforementioned youtuber) and they were produced for years in very small batches so having one really gave you a high level of legitimacy as a knifemo. They are more available now, but cost $1,000 retail.

There are also shirogorov knives, which are very plain looking IMO but are known for having a slightly better fit and finish than other high end knives but sell for like 3 X more. Having one demonstrates that you are a man of means and who has a deep appreciation of quality and craftsmanship.
People also obsess about "special edition" knives which are slight variations on very common designs. For example, a spyderco paramilitary 2 with different handle and steel materials. Shows you are a true knifehead. |
