In the 1980s Micron figured out that if your company was making or doing something considered critical to national security, you could use that to get protectionist favors from the govt. They convinced the US govt that "oh hey we can't lose DRAM production capability to Japan, we have to bail out this company and keep it successful.

I bought a lot of ram from micron back in the day, 15-20 years ago. From what I recall back then they were the only game in town.

Yep. They got the competition accused of "dumping" through their govt connections. Hyundai had to spin off Hynix because it was blocked from selling DRAM here.

So there's more. I mean Micron did stay successful sort of. It makes Crucial and Lexar memory products, not considered low quality. But it's a government-sponsored entity.

The US isn't supposed to do that. In the 80s, everyone thought our commitment to free trade Reaganomics gave Japan a yuge advantage. Japan had this govt agency called MITI that could just eyeball the economy and either tell companies what to make, or what they were PERMITTED to make. So if you were some conglomerate that wanted to make cars, MITI might tell you to make buses instead, and by the time anyone sees an Isuzu car it's already the late 80s and no one knows wtf they are, but they are rugged and reliable as fuck. Why weren't we getting these amazing Isuzu cars in larger quantities in an earlier era? Because MITI told them to make buses. It went like this for every sector of the Japanese economy. COMMAND AND CONTROL just like the USSR!

Wow there's like ZERO recent coverage of any of this. Plenty of coverage from back in the day when this was openly discussed:

https://www.nytimes.com/1992/03/06/business/company-news-americans-fear-chips-are-dumped.html

This was that company that wrote the blueprint that explains why a company like Amazon or Microsoft or Palantir Facebook or even Twitter might want to offer certain services to the government. It makes you part of critical infrastructure and gives you the best government protection you can get out there right now. You can threaten to leave the US over our tax policies but that just makes you the competition for the companies that have their "second" headquarters in Crystal City and Manassas. It's the only way to ensure you have long term protection against certain forms of risk.
