i was doing it until rather recently with kids. it wasn't easy carrying a mortgage in the nyc metro, but it was doable. it can be a sparse existence in a one income household while trying to provide a safe, suburban lifestyle, but it can be done. you have to basically watch every penny to have any savings at all.

so many publicly available data points don't make any sense to me when taken together in the macro. for example, i saw something recently that in my old neighborhood in the bronx the average family income was something like 58k, but the average rent was 1800. so damn near half of your income goes to rent? how is that sustainable? of course accounting for bad data sets/distortions/bimodal distributions/etc., still it seems odd.

Stats like that always seem way off. Either the average is badly skewed vs the median, or people lie, or there’s a huge off the books market, or a ton of trust fund kids. Probably a combo.

Lots of people not paying rent in your old hood. Living with parents, family members, etc. And not sure if they include NYCHA in that figure or how they account for section 8 vouchers, etc.

Lots of people working cash jobs like house cleaners, nannies, etc. not reporting income and still collecting DEM BENNIES

My nanny alone takes up all of that. She costs $60k / year, which is $100k in pretax income. Can't get a cheaper nanny. Daycare would be just as expensive or more expensive.

We couldnt get an Au Pair because we couldnt afford the extra space to put her up in.

So, wife or I would have to stop working.

Also, my monthly housing costs are like $7,500 / month or about $90k / year. That's more than the entire $100k post tax.

So we would have to move to ARE Country.

You have to really ask yourself whether it’s worth it. You are a high income earner but someone else is raising your kids and you aren’t balling to the extent that you can afford an extra bedroom. It sounds like a typical miserable high earning wagecuck situation in MFH.

No. Childcare + Mortgage + taxes + insurance runs about $5k per month. This would leave about $3k for everything else (assuming no federal income or payroll tax liability). Food is about $1k minimum. Gas and insurance is probably $750. Utilities + phone/internet is $750. So that’s $500 left over for home repairs (not enough as we need to spend like $5k per month on our house) and nothing left over for any trips, clothes, gifts, golf, restaurants, or other frolics.

It might be possible, but it would be unbelievably tight.

yes, i've put away money every year of my life, including when i worked a $60k/yr job in MFH out of college and lived in an MFH apartment, later when i was a grad student making $28k/year, and now that i have two kids and a house in a relatively high COL.

i've never spent more than $100k/year

What are you idiots doing that costs so much? I spend about $45k/yr, have a house, eat amazingly well, go on at least 2 weeks of international vacation each year, and generally do whatever I want.

Now, if "what you want" is to be a striver-dork, then I guess that's the answer to my question. But if you're not controlled by a desperate need to manipulate people's perceptions of you through material things, you really don't "want" for much.
