i identify way more with the latter, too. i and most of my friends self-identity as leftists, fwiw. (many of my friends are socialists or communists. i have always been sympathetic to socialist ideals but i don't think we can trust authorities not to fuck it up.)

when it comes to COVID: i've talked about this a lot on here, but my belief is that the left was more susceptible to COVID propaganda because the left is generally more compassionate and empathetic. authorities took advantage of this. "wear a mask, it's the right thing to do to protect the most vulnerable members of society!" we were all like, "ok yeah no prob, it's not a huge inconvenience to me, and if it'll help other people, sure."

The Powers That Be were able to manipulate us into some really dumb shit literally just by playing up the premise that we have to do XYZ to do right by others, that it would be selfish not to.

No, the "left" championed masks so eagerly even (especially) after they were revealed to be mostly useless because they functioned as a conspicuous signal for your political-tribal affiliation. It's the same reason they encourage everybody to list pronouns. Same reason they say "not talking about politics is taking a political stand" and so forth. i think you're fundamentally misunderstanding the goals of those of us who want to dismantle the rotten law enforcement institution.

first of all, we believe that a lot of responses that are currently handled by pigs should instead be handled by mental health professionals, ppl trained in de-escalation of conflicts, etc... not armed thugs. we also support — critically — community measures to decrease crime in the first place. neither of those has anything to do with replacing cops with people on Our Side.

as far as tearing down the current system and building it back up, which is what i want to do, your theory is within the realm of possibility. but to me, it isn't about replacing cops with people who agree with me, or replacing the current ""training"" with lib indoctrination lol. i think we'd gain a lot just by training them better in a technical sense. if these fucking morons weren't so easily scared and trigger-happy — racist or not — we'd see a huge decrease in police brutality. but ya, the second thing that needs to happen is that the toxic law enforcement culture (which by all accounts encourages machismo, power tripping, violence, lack of compassion, etc.) needs to be eliminated. and that's inherently political to a degree. so i don't know if we'd be able to meet in the middle about a cultural overhaul of police, bc you would prob just assume i want indoctrination where i really just want... humanity. seriously that's all i want.

i guess i can't speak for everyone who wants to defund (either partially or completely) the police, but that's how I think of it, at least.

ur also v paranoid about libs wanting to take our guns lmao, the vast majority of people i talk to just want to tighten gun control to reduce the gun violence epidemic. (and that doesn't just mean the mass shooters that get national attention. for example, i support and contribute financially to organizations devoted to decreasing gang membership through various community measures to keep kids away from that shit.)
