Is there a way I can get into this / groups I should be looking to join? I applied for points this year in California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. I figure if I accumulate some over the next 5 years I can draw units that won't be packed with hunter (I don't want to hunt in the hills right outside LA or SD with a thousand of other people).
Preferably I'd like a mentor or something, or at least a club I can get into that will facilitate hunting trips. |

I'm out west and am pretty comfortable with long backpacking trips. Looking to hunt deer at first (buck or doe, don't care for my first one) before moving on to elk and maybe moose. I always assumed I'd scout a unit via Google Earth and try to find a "base camp" that wasn't too close to a road but was close to a ridgeline that provided access to a few sources of water, and then spend my days glassing from the ridgeline. |
