His select team tryouts for 10U are at the end of July. I'm honestly not sure he'll make it. I like that it's merit based and no participation trophy but he will be crushed if he doesn't make it. I don't even care about the all stars team and we have to clear out his select practices to accommodate.

I'm doing an extra hour a night after practice. We're using weighted balls for a batting routine. Probably dropping $300 on a new glove tomorrow.

Base price for nice leather glove. His current mit is old (bought used) and need to cycle through while breaking in. Bats are $150.

It's true that kids don't have good hand strength, so getting a glove that's flexible to start and breaking it in is important. But you should be able to do that for under $50.

bro, you can't find a real leather glove for $50. They start at like $100. Pro series is around $250. You can find nice used stuff on facebook though. I found a nice mizuno pro for like $20. They're $300 new.

I guess you're right about synthetic leather/real leather. I can't imagine it making a big difference for a 9U player, though.

Interestingly, the glove my son got last year for under $50 at Big 5 now costs $99 on Amazon.

I don't think performance wise it matters but more so for longevity. I've got another son too and I plan on using anything we get for him too. He better like baseball.

And yes prices across the board have almost doubled. Bats are $100 for anything decent now. Just dropped another $100 on one this morning.

He doesn't but let's say Gibberish, who can afford the $300 glove, makes a rational decision and gets his son a more reasonably priced glove. His son shows up to tryouts and all the other kids have the $300 glove. Imagine further that for totally unrelated reasons his son doesn't make the team.

Gibberish will feel unbearable guilt about being the worst father of all time.

also, the kid may get a marginal benefit in his fielding ability by having a higher quality glove that would justify the incremental cost of the $300 glove, particularly because kids typically keep their gloves for multiple years. That would seem reasonable to just about any parent who isn't of a particular religious affiliation.

I don't really believe in the marginal benefit of a $300 glove for a 9 year old. Because of how fast kids grow at that age, he would probably have a much bigger benefit in getting a new, slightly larger, glove every season.

I agree you don't *need* to, but the kid would probably benefit from the large size if their hand has grown enough. You also don't *need* to get a $300 glove.

Breaking the glove in takes time but not more than a year.

if the glove is going to last the kid for 3+ years then it's NBD to spend $300. I don't know anything about baseball so I assumed a growing kid would need a new glove every year.

i know absolutely nothing about baseball. i'm assuming the price difference has to do with the quality and softness of leather used and stitching.

if the higher end glove will make your kid excited to play and foster a love for the sport, I'd think there's more value in that than the quality of the glove making him a better player.

Our coaches are very young. All former college or semi pro players. Most are looking to move up the coaching ranks. They kind of don't like crazy parents.

Two families on our team have full indoor 60 foot batting cages. Like indoor on a concrete pad. A third is putting one in.

This is a true story. I know a guy who became an alcoholic because he was left-handed and his dad refused to buy him a left-handed glove. So he fielded with a rigged up righty and didn't make the top team and he has hated his dad for forty years. He talks about this like all the time.

whatever he excels in, encourage him to do that (if he's already a good outfielder, but wants to be a pitcher, steer him towards being the best outfielder) and make sure he has decent equipment. i was invited to a select team for soccer in the spring but my parents had already signed me up for baseball, which i was ass at. who knows if i would've gotten really good at soccer or kept playing it all the way through high school...but ill never know and it is something i regret to this day.

for baseball specifically, make sure he hits up the batting cage a couple times a week in addition to practice. hitting is the biggest step up around that age group and a lot of kids get left behind.

My school (cyo) and parents pushed basketball. Lol. I didn't play football until high-school and I was much better.

My kid has great coordination and hand-eye reaction time. But mostly he's just incredibly competitive. Far more than I ever was. He didn't trust any of the kids on his little league team and basically played short stop from first to third. Bad part is him noticeably groaning when other kids fucked up. I expect other kids to catch up though. I imagine that's normal.

I bought a pitching machine and I take him to the park at least twice a week with a bucket of balls. Do you think that's comparable to the cage? The actual batting cage by our house is like $40 a visit. I didn't play baseball and have no idea. He really wants to pitch and I think it's a waste of time.

Kids that are 9 by August I think.

Are you pitching to your kid? I highly recommend doing so. Half way through season decent coaches will do first 4 swings as pitches. Next is getting him to understand thr game. After that we got a net and had him to lots of repetitive hitting off the t. Left handed is great but I don't think the advantage shows up until later.

If he can jump to coach pitch next year and try for majors by 8. Those seem to be the most advanced kids. Make sure to keep it fun.

our little league doesn't allow coach pitch to mix with strict t ball. We have t ball kids that are super young and terrible, girls are allowed etc. It's kind of stupid.

he's a better batter than vast majority of other t ballers and hit a kid in the head with a line drive a few weeks ago. I think he would still be too young to jump to coach pitch next year but not totally sure. have not started pitching to him yet. the little league t ball season is ridiculously short, so I like the idea of select so he can keep playing in real games.

Definitely start pitching to him. Most of the other kids will start dropping off, especially girls. Select usually starts at 8u. I would highly encourage the jump to coach pitch. T ball two years is pretty brutal.

That would certainly make sense, but I didn't notice a huge difference on our team this year. We had mostly 10 and 11 year olds, and one 9 year old playing up. The 9 yo was the best batter, followed by one of the 10 year olds, followed by an 11yo who was young for his "league age."

Run differential is used as a tie breaker so they will run up 20 run plus scores. They also do this tricky thing where the coach gives a game ball to one of the opposing team players. I thought it was classy but another dad told me it's a scouting trick. They're tracking the kids to recruit.

hitting, fielding, throwing.

that's what he needs now. pitching is great, but everyone sucks at that age, and you can't pitch every game.

being a shitty fielder will get exposed right away. having skills in the field will make him seem like a 1st round pick.

don't use weighted balls to hit. your kid is a 9U twink, not a D1 prospect.

little league is gay.

Pitching is terrible but once they hit their very low limit and you burn past the first 3 kids the games turn to complete shit. My kid is great at fielding. They use him to back up second but most importantly 3rd. The runs seem to bunch up there. Little league is pretty terrible .

The weighted balls let me do batting at home.

Sounds like you played in school. Seems like other kids are catching up to mine at the plate. Not sure how to keep the edge.

Playing with parents/coaches that don't encourage being a good teammate/sportsmanship sounds fucking awful.

That's one good thing about regular Little League. Every team has a few kids who can't play for shit, so fuck ups happen all the time and you can't really single out one play (although that doesn't stop the good kids from getting upset when they fuck up or a call doesn't to their way).

Mercy ruled against a team that had 6 kids from his select team. Our best player was out. He went 0/2 with a bunt that advanced a run and a line drive caught. Season over.

As much as the girls complained they were still sad to see the little league season over. Kind of sad myself. The team last year went to district.

He actually asked me if doing the girls ballet technique (strength training) would improve his play. It would. My girls can pump out push-ups.

there's nothing in the world more fucking retarded than pre-pubescent tackle football.

football, at least, is still (for the most part) a high school sport (vs youth travel teams, academies, etc. in other sports) when it comes to d1 recruiting

I'd only do it for the strength training. It's boring as fuck.

I was wrong above. Age cut-off for select teams is April 30 (old little league age) but August 1st for little league. My kid is only going into 3rd and the other kids are going into 4th. He was league age 8 this year. From the website they prefer kids to play with their grade level so they stay with same cohort through high school etc.

Not sure what to do here. Kid wants to stay with 10u but not sure that's the best course. Other dad also said to do tryouts for a bunch of teams if only for the exposure and feedback. These people are nuts.

To those of you who grew up in baseball areas (FL, CA, etc) -- did you have real travel teams when you grew up? Did you only play on them?

When I played we did normal town little league then it ended and I did the all-star / tournament team for my town (which then compeyefnin the LLWS).

Did travel/club teams always exist in baseball?

I did not grow up in a baseball area. It was too wet for half the year giving places like CA an edge. But now everything moves indoors during the winter. Even full on tournaments. That certainly didn't exist when I was a kid. The travel teams also don't hurt the lower divisions as much as they do the upper leagues. Little league is pretty much done for 14+ kids.

We did home town league, then once that season ended, we had travel baseball. Presumably they did it this way so everyone got to play in the league and then the best players for that season were selected for the travel team where we'd play other towns and do tournaments and stuff

That's how it should be. Now most of them compete against each other. The baseball lady in charge of our little league chapter is openly hostile to the travel teams. It just makes my life harder. The guy that runs little league a division over actually designed the schedule for the season to accommodate their travel ball kids. Imagine that.

Just had tryouts for next year. Kid did really well and I think they're going to push us to put him a year up. He did 9u last year and I'd rather have him repeat (he's under age). 3 of the best players from last year bolted for another team though. Tons of new kids.

He loves it. However, he'll play mine craft for hours if we let him. I need to regulate on this. Last year he was all over me none stop to go play catch and BP. Now I don't get that as much. It was a long year though.

His select team tryouts for 10U are at the end of July. I'm honestly not sure he'll make it. I like that it's merit based and no participation trophy but he will be crushed if he doesn't make it past black october

Yeah I was being a bitch. We did had a few private lessons for him which helped both his play as well as let the coaches know we are serious. Seeing the other kids at tryouts also put things in perspective. Some of them really looked lost.

I signed him up for fall ball with another select team. It's 4 days a week through October.

We decided to have our kids pick one sport and stick with it. However, I regret not signing him up for football because of the conditioning. Or even soccer. Baseball barely does any speed drills and certainly nothing like what you get running in competition. It's made me change my mind about multiple sports. Girls are straight ballet. But my oldest daughter would be an incredible soccer player. The coach here for the select team really pushed for us to sign her up.
