Date: June 25th, 2022 3:49 PM Author: Avocado flirting puppy windowlicker Nobody, NOBODY called it an RPG during the 8/16 bit days. Complete revisionist history. Anyways, the key factors that make it definitely NOT an RPG (and specifically a not jrpg) are:
-no experience points. This one is determinative. No matter how many enemies you kill, you will not level up. -no character stats. 99% determinative. If it doesn't have stats like STR, AGI, MAG, etc then it almost certainly isn't an RPG, and definitely isn't a jrpg -you grow in power EXCLUSIVELY by finding items, emphasizing the exploration aspect. 100% Determinative. -you do not have a party. Determinative as to jrpg but not necessarily RPGs in general (see elder scrolls, etc) -no plot. Not determinative on its own, but highly predictive -the battles are action-based with direct character control, with no transition to a separate battle state. Automatically this slots it as an "action RPG" AT MOST. But in combination with the other factors, most notably the lack of stats, experience points, and growing in power exclusively through items, Zelda is placed firmly in the adventure genre. As a side note, games like Tales of Destiny are jrpgs rather than action rpgs based primarily on the transition to a seperate battle state.

What constantly amazes me here is that at the time these games came out, the genres were very clearly dilineated between action-based "adventure" games, with Zelda being the quintessential example, and turn-based jrpgs. But through 1984-style newspeak, Zelda has somehow morphed into an "action RPG" or just plain "RPG" or even a "jrpg" according to some of the retards here. And according to millennials, "adventure" games are now those text-based point and clickers like liesure suit larry.
I don't buy ANY of that bullshit. Zelda games, and especially OLD Zelda games, have not retroactively switched genres. They are STILL adventure games. Nigger. |

the music is great and the scenario is solid, but the execution of the plot made it basically unplayable
and everyone rants about the linearity, But the fact that it was just a hallway simulator wasn't its biggest problem. It didn't have any real antagonist, or enough forces conflict. so the plot just kind of sits there. pretty and boring.
