The Siege of Firebase Gloria, with some serviceable but not so great actors...yet this movie is maybe the best Vietnam war movie ever...not a really slick movie...but it really has something going for it...grit?

and then we have Where Eagles Dare, with 2 great actors--richard burton and clint eastwood...a great ww2 movie..top notch production values...

these 2 movies are in the running for the best war movies of all time...

i like big eastern bloc war films where they used actual military units as extras, like the soviet war and peace from the late-60's, or 'liberation' (the huge soviet WWII movie from 1970), or khan asparuh from bulgaria.

i just got thru rewatching SOFG, and I have to say that it is 2nd tier in the greatest war movies of all time...the acting is just not that good...

first tier? Where Eagles Dare, Bridge on the River Kwai, the great escape, stalag 17, von ryan's express...but those are mostly all POW movies...when it comes to pure war movies...now about Full Metal Jacket? Eh...

How about Apocalypse Now?

The Deer Hunter? Sort of a war movie...

Then we have Platoon, Causalties of War, and Hamburger Hill, both of which are a bit too woke for me to put them in this tier...

But I do need to rewatch Hamburger Hill...

Then we have Starship Troopers...

I also need to rewatch Thin Red Line...that one might be in this top tier..

I never really like Saving Private Ryan all that much..it puts on airs..same thing for We Were Soldiers...Enemy at the Gates, maybe...need to rewatch that one...

thin red line is ghastly bad. just comical almost. I rewatched it recently (after walking out of it in theater) and posted about how bad it was

Casualties of War is very woke but it has a couple of great scenes, including this one. damn near perfect

The Longest Day was a great one. I remember trying to get my parents to rent it every week. I would watch it over and over again. It was so long it took two video tapes.

I’ll also go against the grain and say Kelly’s Heroes was great for a young kid aspiring to one day be a paratrooper.

See hamburger hill for that type of movie done 100x better.

And I’m a big Mel Gibson fan.
